As December 1 approaches, security dynamics in Papua have once again become a serious concern for various societal elements. This date is often exploited by certain groups to provoke unrest, disrupt social cohesion, and create anxiety. Amid the period leading up to Christmas and the anniversary celebration of Wamena City, maintaining public calm is a top priority. Therefore, the joint commitment between local government, indigenous communities, and security forces is essential in rejecting all forms of provocation ahead of December 1.

In Jayawijaya Regency, the National and Political Unity Agency (Bakesbangpol), together with the Indigenous Community Institution (LMA) from 40 districts, has strengthened coordination to prevent potential security disruptions. Acting Head of Jayawijaya Bakesbangpol, Amos Asso, emphasized the importance of cross-sector consolidation to create a safe and conducive atmosphere. According to Amos, the meeting between local government, LMA, and youth organizations aims to build collective awareness so that the community remains calm, does not get easily influenced by misleading issues, and avoids actions that could be exploited by provocative groups. His statement highlights the strong commitment of the regional government to ensuring public safety, while emphasizing that vigilance must be accompanied by solidarity among all parties.

Amos also stressed that the security situation in December is not only related to groups opposing the state ideology, but also because this month is a peaceful period of worship for Christians. Residents are expected to enter the Christmas season with joy, free from fear caused by provocations. As the capital of the Papua Pegunungan Province, Wamena requires stable conditions to ensure that government activities and public services run smoothly. Through Amos’s appeal to communities in the 40 districts, the regional government’s serious effort to preserve social harmony is evident.

In line with these efforts, other regions in Papua have also strengthened preparedness. The Nabire Indigenous Community Institution is actively educating indigenous residents on the importance of maintaining order ahead of December 1. The Chairman of LMA Nabire, Karel Misiro, emphasized that this date often brings social dynamics that must be anticipated with maturity and caution. He reminded traditional leaders to heighten vigilance, avoid provocations, and refrain from spreading unverified information. Karel also outlined potential vulnerabilities, such as increased activity from certain groups, disruptions to mobility, and provocative actions such as road blockades or tire burning. His firm stance underscores the strategic role of indigenous communities as government partners in maintaining social calm.

Karel further explained that the local government and security forces have taken anticipatory measures, from monitoring vulnerable points to adopting persuasive approaches with the public. This shows that preventing provocation is not merely a matter of enforcement, but also of communication and strengthening relationships between indigenous communities and security forces. As a result, the sense of security stems not only from surveillance but from public trust in the government and security apparatus.

From a security standpoint, Commander of Kodim 1710/Mimika, Lt. Col. Inf. M. Slamet Wijaya, stated that ahead of December 1, security forces have increased preparedness and cross-sector coordination to ensure public safety. He explained that Timika City remains safe and under control, while several inland districts are categorized as vulnerable but manageable. Geographic conditions and proximity to conflict-prone mountainous areas are key factors requiring additional vigilance. However, Lt. Col. Slamet assured that anticipatory measures have been carried out systematically, supported by coordination between the TNI, Polri, and other security elements.

His statement underscores that the presence of security personnel in vulnerable areas is aimed at protecting residents. Their deployment is not meant to create fear but to ensure that citizens can carry out daily activities without disruption. He also emphasized the importance of public support in maintaining a conducive situation. This demonstrates that the success of safeguarding security is not solely the responsibility of security forces but the result of collective cooperation.

Beyond security measures, the government in South Papua also prioritizes social and cultural approaches to maintain a positive atmosphere. The Regional Secretary of South Papua, Ferdinandus Kainakaimu, encouraged the community to start enlivening the Christmas atmosphere from early December. He urged Christmas committees to issue circulars asking residents to decorate public facilities and neighborhoods. This initiative aims to build a peaceful and joyful ambiance that reduces the opportunity for provocations. By focusing on positive activities, public attention is directed toward preparing for a safe and orderly Christmas celebration.

The series of measures taken by various elements in Papua demonstrates the shared seriousness and commitment to rejecting provocations ahead of December 1. Local governments, LMA, traditional leaders, and security forces complement one another in maintaining order, strengthening vigilance, and reinforcing solidarity. Through continuous coordination, Papua shows that stability can be achieved when all parties recognize security as the foundation of social life.

The momentum of December 1 should not be used as a platform for provocations that harm the public. Instead, the date should serve as a reminder that peace, unity, and order are collective responsibilities. With full support from all layers of society, Papua can begin this month of compassion in a calm atmosphere and ensure that every resident can celebrate Christmas safely and harmoniously.
