Jakarta – A crucial message regarding the importance of safeguarding democracy from anarchic actions emerged in a talk show broadcast on a national private television station. Religious figures and academics agreed that freedom of expression must be exercised in an orderly manner to prevent harm to the wider community and national interests.

The Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), KH. Marsudi Syuhud, emphasized that expressing criticism of the government is part of religious teachings and a constitutionally guaranteed right. However, he stated that such expression must remain within the law.

“Expressing opinions is a right, but if it leads to destruction and looting, it clearly violates both religious and positive law,” said KH. Marsudi Syuhud.

He explained that maintaining order is part of being patient in enforcing regulations. Actions that cause damage are considered contrary to religious values and the law, and have the potential to cost lives and property. Marsudi also appreciated President Prabowo Subianto’s swift action in inviting interfaith leaders to mitigate the potential for political escalation. According to him, this initiative is a clear example of how dialogue can be key to preventing destructive actions.

In the same forum, Aditya Perdana, a political communications expert from the University of Indonesia, emphasized that democracy does provide ample space for the public to express their aspirations. However, boundaries must be maintained to prevent negative impacts.

“When protests turn into destruction of public facilities, it is the public who suffers the most because they lose access to public services,” Aditya Perdana emphasized.

Aditya believes that excessive demonstrations often give rise to distrust among citizens. Therefore, reminders regarding demonstration rules—from procedures to time limits—must be continuously communicated. He also believes the President’s swift response is the right step to anticipate potential escalation, particularly by involving religious leaders and community organizations with strong grassroots networks.

Furthermore, Aditya emphasized the importance of public officials being cautious in making statements, especially in the digital space. He believes that insensitivity can actually trigger disappointment, which can escalate into uncontrolled actions. Transparency, empathy, and consistent law enforcement are believed to be the main foundations for maintaining a healthy democracy free from anarchy.

Democracy will be stronger if it is implemented peacefully and free from anarchy. The message conveyed by these religious figures and academics emphasized that freedom of expression must be placed within legal and moral boundaries, so that it does not become destructive and detrimental to society. By channeling aspirations in an orderly manner, national unity can be maintained, while development proceeds unhindered for Indonesia’s progress.
