Repeat Regional Elections Succeed; Safeguarding Political Stability and National Unity
JAKARTA – Papua Provincial Election Commission (KPU) member, Yohannes Fajar Kambon, stated that the Repeat Voting (PSU) for the Papua Governor and Deputy Governor Election was successfully carried out in a safe, peaceful, and orderly manner.
“This PSU is recorded as the most peaceful in the history of Papua’s regional elections. The situation reflects the maturity of the Papuan people in practicing democracy,” he said.
In line with this, Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni, expressed appreciation for the positive assessment. According to him, the success was inseparable from the cooperation of all elements, including the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), KPU, Bawaslu, local governments, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and the community.
“Papua has proven to Indonesia and the world that the democratic process can take place peacefully, with dignity, and in the spirit of togetherness,” he emphasized.
He also urged the public to be patient in awaiting the official results to be announced by KPU. Fatoni reminded everyone of the importance of maintaining a conducive atmosphere until the inauguration of the elected governor and deputy governor, while also asking citizens to uphold Papua’s positive image at both the national and international levels.
Meanwhile, the Papua People’s Assembly (MRP) also expressed full support for the PSU. MRP Chairperson, Nerlince Wamuar Rollo, called on supporters of all candidate pairs to maintain peace after the voting.
“All stages of the process are regulated by rules and mechanisms, so all parties are urged to entrust the outcome to the organizers,” Nerlince said.
Papua Police spokesperson, Police Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, likewise reminded the public to maintain security stability throughout the vote-counting process.
“A conducive situation is the main condition to ensure that the PSU results are accepted by all sides without unrest,” Cahyo stressed.
In addition to Papua, the PSU also took place in Boven Digoel Regency (South Papua) and Barito Utara Regency (Central Kalimantan). These elections marked the implementation of Constitutional Court rulings on electoral disputes. With the smooth conduct of repeat voting in the three regions, the democratic process proceeded according to regulations and on schedule.
With the peaceful implementation of the PSU, Indonesia’s democracy once again demonstrated its political maturity. This success stands as concrete proof that national unity and political stability can be preserved through the joint commitment of all elements of society.
