Researchers Applaud Increased Rice Production, Fueling Optimism for Food Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta — Researchers have expressed their appreciation for the government’s achievements in increasing national rice production, which continues to show a positive trend throughout 2025. This increase is seen as a strong signal that Indonesia is on the right track toward sustainable food self-sufficiency.
Riyanto, a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Economic and Social Research at the University of Indonesia (LPEM UI), believes this achievement is a strong signal that the food self-sufficiency target, President Prabowo’s grand vision, is getting closer to being realized.
“This means that self-sufficiency is within sight, and we have concretely succeeded in providing domestic rice,” said Riyanto.
According to him, the success of increasing rice production is inextricably linked to the role of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) under the leadership of Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.
Throughout 2025, Amran was seen as successful in mobilizing farmers and local governments to strengthen the national agricultural sector.
“He (Minister of Agriculture Amran) is the one who motivated farmers and regional heads to work together to develop the agricultural sector, particularly in increasing the national rice supply,” Riyanto continued.
He believes the government’s policy of raising the government purchase price (HPP) for dry milled grain (GKG) to IDR 6,500 per kilogram (kg) was the right move, resulting in the current rice surplus.
“When farmers achieved an additional surplus and the rice-growing climate in villages was very encouraging, the government set the price of unhusked rice at IDR 6,500 per kilogram,” Riyanto said.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan also expressed his deep appreciation to Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman for his hard work and extraordinary achievements in the agricultural sector during the one-year term of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
“My sincere thanks to the President for his guidance. This year, we have achieved very encouraging results. Specifically for the agricultural sector, I express my deepest gratitude to the Minister of Agriculture, the Deputy Minister, and all staff at the Ministry of Agriculture for their extraordinary work,” said Coordinating Minister Zulhas.
Coordinating Minister Zulhas emphasized that the success of the agricultural sector during the Prabowo-Gibran administration is the main foundation for national food independence and sovereignty. He considered the achievement of rice self-sufficiency to be concrete evidence of the hard work of various ministries and institutions.
“Last year, we imported around 4.5 million tons of rice. Now, in 2025, it will be zero. There will be no imports. Stocks at Bulog will reach 3.8 million tons. This means we are already self-sufficient,” he emphasized.
The government is committed to continuing various flagship programs such as land intensification, improving the quality of agricultural human resources, and strengthening national food reserves. With continuous synergy and innovation, Indonesia is optimistic that it can strengthen the foundation towards resilient and sovereign food self-sufficiency.
