Respect for Re-vote Results as a Foundation for Democratic Consolidation
Jayapura – The central and regional governments emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and peace in the implementation of the re-vote (PSU) for the Papuan regional elections, as part of the democratic consolidation process in Papua. Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian urged all elements, especially the new Acting Governor of Papua, to prioritize a collaborative approach involving the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkompimda), district/city governments, as well as traditional, religious, youth, and women’s leaders.
“I ask that all components be involved; no one should be left behind. Papua needs an orderly and peaceful atmosphere for the re-vote to run smoothly and for the results to be accepted by all parties,” said Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian.
Meanwhile, after being inaugurated as Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni reiterated his commitment to overseeing the re-vote implementation with a participatory approach. Upon arrival in Jayapura, he immediately held meetings with traditional and religious leaders to gather their aspirations and build mutual understanding.
“I immediately discussed it with traditional and religious leaders. We want to ensure that the re-election process runs safely, peacefully, and participatory. I am grateful for the warm welcome and full support from various parties,” said Fatoni.
Fatoni also conveyed that strategic support from the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) and the Papuan House of Representatives (DPRD) has been secured to ensure a democratic climate is maintained.
“We agree that maintaining a conducive environment is key to the smooth running of the re-election. This is not only the government’s responsibility, but also the responsibility of all elements of society,” he added.
He encouraged all Papuans to come to the polling stations on August 6, 2025, and exercise their right to vote responsibly.
“This re-election is an opportunity to strengthen democracy in Papua and must be safeguarded together,” he explained.
During a coordination meeting with all heads of regional government agencies (OPD), regents, and mayors across Papua, both in person and virtually, Fatoni emphasized the importance of civil servant neutrality and a commitment to not engage in practical politics.
“I have reminded civil servants to maintain neutrality. This is not about politics, but about our professionalism and moral responsibility as public servants,” Fatoni emphasized.
According to him, the success of the re-election is not only measured by the smoothness of the technical aspects, but also by the ability of all parties to maintain a spirit of togetherness.
“If we are solid and united, the re-election will be a crucial momentum for building a more democratic Papua,” he concluded.
