Results of the ASEAN Summit: Economic Recovery Efforts Due to the Global Crisis

West Manggarai – Various agreements have been agreed upon by the leaders of ASEAN countries at the 42nd ASEAN Summit held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

President Joko Widodo said that several things had been agreed upon by the leaders of ASEAN countries at the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, NTT. Thursday (11/5/2023).

Jokowi said global economic conditions were still uncertain and still had the potential to threaten regional economies in the region. Therefore, Jokowi emphasized to continue to collaborate in increasing regional economic cooperation.

“In this situation, we must further strengthen collaboration to maintain ASEAN as the epicenter of growth,” said the Indonesian President.

The various agreements agreed upon by ASEAN leaders are efforts to respond to the current global economic crisis. therefore, President Joko Widodo also appealed to prepare a vision for future challenges that are increasingly complex.

The ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo focuses on economic recovery due to global uncertainty. For this reason, ASEAN countries will continue to make efforts and be committed to overcoming the global crisis they are facing. The President stated that the ASEAN Vision 2045 must be more adaptive and forward-looking.

“The ASEAN 2045 vision must be more adaptive and forward looking, not business as usual,” said the President.

Several agreements from the ASEAN Summit included mentioning that ASEAN member countries condemned the violence in Myanmar, agreement on ongoing efforts to formulate the ASEAN Post-2025 Vision, Development of ASEAN centrality and unity, development of information and communication technology after the Covid-19 pandemic, Development of electric vehicles as part of ASEAN’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Development of regional payment connectivity and the use of local currency for cross-border transactions, protection of migrant fishers, adjustment of policies to provide assistance to migrant workers, strengthening multi-sectoral cooperation and coordination to establish the One Health Initiative national mechanism, establishment of the ASEAN Villages Network with the aim of facilitating cooperation between villages and empower villages to accelerate rural transformation.

According to Jokowi, ASEAN must be able to answer the challenges in the next 20 years. Therefore, Jokowi said that Indonesia must be able to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of ASEAN institutions to contribute to providing solutions in various fields.

Indonesia ensures that the three main pillars of its chairmanship in ASEAN 2023 will become concrete results and can be implemented by each member country in the long term.
