Rice Stocks Reach 4 Million Tons, Government Strengthens Food Self-Sufficiency Program

Jakarta — The Indonesian government has achieved a historic milestone in the food security sector by successfully reaching the Government Rice Reserve (CBP) of 4 million tons. This is the highest achievement since Indonesia’s independence and lays a strong foundation for achieving sustainable national food self-sufficiency.

President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that food self-sufficiency is the government’s top priority.

“I will not rest until Indonesia is self-sufficient in food. Every province must be self-sufficient. Every island must be self-sufficient,” the President emphasized.

Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that this achievement is not merely a statistic, but a symbol of the increasing welfare of farmers and the strength of the national agricultural system.

“This is an unprecedented achievement since Indonesia’s independence. A stock of four million tons is a symbol of farmer independence and prosperity,” Amran said.

This success is the result of the hard work of all stakeholders, from farmers to extension workers to the government bureaucracy. To maintain this momentum, the government is implementing three main pillars of national food policy.

First, reforming subsidized fertilizers by increasing the budget from IDR 28 trillion to IDR 46.8 trillion by 2025. The fertilizer allocation covers 9.55 million tons for nine strategic commodities, including rice and corn. The government is also tightening distribution by involving officials to prevent misuse.

Second, establishing a Government Purchase Price (HPP) that is more profitable for farmers. The HPP for unhusked rice is increased to IDR 6,500 per kilogram and for corn to IDR 5,500 per kilogram. The government is also eliminating the price-fixing system that has been detrimental to farmers.

Third, strengthening regulations through two Presidential Regulations: Presidential Regulation No. 192 of 2024 concerning institutional reform of the Ministry of Agriculture to support precision agriculture, and Presidential Regulation No. 6 of 2025 concerning the governance of subsidized fertilizers.

PT Pupuk Indonesia also continues to guarantee fertilizer distribution to the westernmost tip of the archipelago. With a guaranteed adequate fertilizer supply, national food production can be significantly increased, even making Aceh one of Indonesia’s main food barns. Farmers in the area also hope that a better irrigation system can be built soon to support productivity.

“We are reviewing the fertilizer distribution and production chain in Aceh to ensure there are no obstacles in fertilizer distribution,” said Rahmad Pribadi, President Director of PT Pupuk Indonesia.

The government affirms its commitment to maintaining affordable food availability for all, while building a resilient agricultural system to face climate challenges and global price fluctuations. This achievement marks a major step toward true food self-sufficiency, a pillar of national independence.
