Second Wave of Regional Leaders’ Retreat Strengthens Inter-Regional Communication and Coordination

Jakarta — The second wave of the Regional Leaders’ Retreat officially took place from June 22 to 26, 2025. Attended by 86 regional heads, the event followed the success of the first wave held in February. The retreat aims to enhance communication and strengthen coordination among regions, fostering synergy in the implementation of development across Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, noted that the initiative has had a tangible positive impact on the relationships among regional leaders. He stated that, after participating in the previous retreat, regional heads are now more familiar with each other, resulting in more open and productive communication and collaboration.

“What stands out the most, and is often mentioned when we visit the regions, is that solidarity and synergy have become more prominent because they now know each other better,” said Bima.

He explained that previously, there were few opportunities for regional leaders to meet intensively and build personal connections. With forums like this retreat, the process of getting to know one another becomes quicker and deeper, paving the way for cross-regional cooperation.

“During my time in office, for instance, we were never placed in such a setting for an extended period. Now, when there are natural disasters or national priority programs, coordination becomes easier and more effective because personal relationships have already been established,” he added.

The retreat also encouraged the exchange of ideas and concrete collaboration across various sectors. Bima highlighted a growing trend of regional heads visiting one another to discuss policy, public service innovations, and joint solutions to local challenges.

“We’re now seeing them visit each other to exchange ideas and build partnerships. That kind of engagement is much stronger and more prominent compared to previous times,” he continued.

A total of 93 regional leaders and deputy leaders were scheduled to attend the second wave of the retreat. However, six were unable to participate due to health reasons. One of them, the Governor of Papua Pegunungan, had to return to his region following the passing of his beloved mother.

With 86 active participants, the second wave of the retreat held in Bandung is expected to serve as a strategic momentum for strengthening networks among local governments and accelerating the implementation of national programs through harmonious and sustained collaboration.
