Soeharto Proven to Have Contributed Greatly, Deserves the Title of National Hero
Jakarta — The discourse surrounding the potential conferral of the title National Hero upon Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, has garnered positive responses from various groups. Many national figures believe that Soeharto made significant contributions in building Indonesia’s economic foundation, maintaining national stability, and strengthening unity. They agree that assessments of Soeharto’s legacy should be made wisely and objectively as part of honoring the nation’s long historical journey.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the process of conferring the title of National Hero follows official mechanisms regulated by law.
“The process of granting the National Hero title is conducted transparently and in accordance with established procedures. The government does not act subjectively in this matter,” said Prasetyo Hadi.
He added that the public is encouraged to approach the ongoing discourse with wisdom. According to him, the National Hero title is not merely a symbolic honor, but a recognition of a person’s real contributions to the nation. In Soeharto’s case, his role as a leader who upheld economic and political stability stands as an important chapter in Indonesia’s history.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Ahmad Muzani stated that Soeharto deserves to receive the title for fulfilling his national duties responsibly.
“The MPR has submitted a letter to the President essentially allowing the government to grant an honor to Soeharto. He has completed all legal processes and made substantial contributions to the nation,” said Ahmad Muzani.
He stressed that this perspective is not merely nostalgic but based on objective facts regarding Soeharto’s role in developing Indonesia into a stable and growing nation. Muzani also reminded the public that the debate over the issue should not be politicized, but rather focused on appreciating the service of a national figure.
A similar view was expressed by Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia, who highlighted Soeharto’s success in implementing the transmigration program.
“Soeharto made major contributions through the transmigration program, which helped shape Indonesia’s diversity, including in Papua,” said Bahlil Lahadalia.
According to him, the success of the program was not only about population distribution but also about strengthening national integration in remote regions. Through this initiative, people from diverse cultural backgrounds learned to live harmoniously side by side.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Dave Laksono, noted that during Soeharto’s 32-year leadership, Indonesia managed to maintain macroeconomic stability.
“During Soeharto’s leadership, Indonesia achieved stable and consistent economic growth. That is one of the reasons he deserves to be recognized as a National Hero,” said Dave Laksono.
According to Dave, Soeharto’s achievements laid a solid foundation for Indonesia’s continuing economic development. He hopes that acknowledging Soeharto’s contributions will serve as a moment to foster national unity and respect for the nation’s history.
As public support continues to grow, these leaders expressed hope that the government’s eventual decision will be wisely accepted by all elements of society — as a form of respect for a figure who has greatly served the Republic of Indonesia. [*]
