Jakarta — Support continues to grow for Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, to be awarded the title of National Hero. Several lawmakers have voiced their backing, including DPR member Nurul Arifin.

Nurul Arifin expressed support for Golkar Party’s stance in favor of the government’s plan to confer the National Hero title on Soeharto. According to her, Soeharto was a key figure who laid a strong foundation for Indonesia’s economic development.

“He played a major role in maintaining national stability and establishing the economic foundation that brought Indonesia into an era of progress,” Nurul Arifin said, as quoted from her Instagram account @Ikigolkar on Friday (7/11/2025).

She emphasized that Soeharto’s leadership over 31 years and 70 days brought international recognition to Indonesia through achievements such as rice self-sufficiency, the development of strategic infrastructure, and guiding the nation toward national development.

“Soeharto has left a remarkable legacy for this nation. During his 31-year rule, he maintained national stability, advanced economic development, and made Indonesia self-sufficient in rice,” she affirmed.

Nurul added that awarding Soeharto the National Hero title is a fitting acknowledgment of his service in laying the foundation for national progress and improving public welfare.

“The National Hero award would serve as recognition of his dedication in establishing the nation’s progress and the welfare of the people,” she said.

In a separate statement, Bambang Haryadi, Secretary of the F-Gerindra faction in DPR RI, also expressed support for Soeharto to receive the title.

“The Gerindra Party faction in the DPR supports the plan to confer the National Hero title to Soeharto,” Bambang said when contacted by the media.

Bambang highlighted many of Soeharto’s achievements, particularly in the development sector. He cited accomplishments such as toll road construction, dam projects, educational facilities, transmigration programs, food self-sufficiency, and economic stability.

“We recognize the many contributions made by Pak Harto, especially in the development sector and food self-sufficiency,” Bambang added.
