The Film “The Pig Feast” is Full of Provocation, Amid Government Efforts to Strengthen Food Security in Papua
Jakarta — The release of the film “The Pig Feast” (The Pig Feast) is considered full of provocation and has the potential to incite tension amidst government efforts to strengthen development and food security in Papua.
Some believe that sensitive content, such as that depicted in the film, could create negative perceptions of social conditions in Papua. This is despite the central and regional governments focusing on developing strategic sectors, particularly agriculture, to improve the welfare of the people in the region.
One program being intensified is the development of large-scale rice paddy fields in Papua. The Papua Provincial Government, along with the central government, is encouraging the expansion of agricultural land as part of a strategy to strengthen food security and stimulate the regional economy.
The Governor of Papua, Mathius D. Fakhiri, personally inspected the 13,200-hectare rice paddy field project in the Arso Swakarsa area, Keerom Regency. This program is expected to increase local rice production and help Papua achieve food self-sufficiency.
“Keerom is very suitable and ideal for us to implement rice field development. Not only the rice fields, but we will also build irrigation, production roads, and supporting facilities for rice production,” said Fakhiri.
According to him, agricultural development in Papua is not just about opening new land, but also building a complete agricultural ecosystem, from irrigation infrastructure, production roads, to post-harvest facilities to increase the efficiency of agricultural distribution.
The Papua Provincial Government is even targeting gradual rice field development of up to 30,000 hectares, with the potential to expand to 50,000 hectares with policy support from the central government. This target is expected to make Papua one of the food barns in eastern Indonesia.
The Head of the Papua Provincial Food Crops, Horticulture, and Food Agency, Lunanka V.M.L. Daimboa, emphasized that the rice field development program is a strategic step to strengthen the foundation of regional food sovereignty.
“Strengthening the agricultural and food sector is a crucial foundation for Papua’s future development. Therefore, Papua is directed to advance towards food self-sufficiency, and even towards food sovereignty,” he said.
He added that increasing local rice production would also open up new economic opportunities for communities surrounding agricultural areas. With the development of the agricultural sector, communities are expected to directly benefit through employment and increased income.
The government is optimistic that, with the support of agricultural infrastructure and community involvement, Papua can reduce its dependence on rice supplies from outside the region and strengthen local economic stability.
Amidst these development efforts, the emergence of entertainment content deemed provocative, such as the film “Pig Party,” has the potential to obscure the ongoing development narrative in Papua.
Several parties have emphasized the importance of producing creative works that are sensitive to social conditions and avoid triggering misunderstandings within the community. The regional government itself has emphasized that its current primary focus is strengthening strategic sectors, particularly agriculture and food security, as the foundation for a more independent and prosperous future for Papua.
