The Government Accelerates Irrigation Rehabilitation to Boost Food Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta – Water availability is a crucial factor in supporting agricultural production, especially as the government aims to achieve food self-sufficiency.
Therefore, the government is focusing on ensuring irrigation water for agricultural supply. President Prabowo Subianto, through Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 2 of 2025 concerning the Acceleration of Development and Rehabilitation of the National Irrigation Network, has mobilized relevant ministries and agencies to immediately provide adequate irrigation networks for agricultural areas.
Following up on the Presidential Instruction, the Ministry of Public Works (PU) has recently launched a plan to begin the construction and rehabilitation of tertiary irrigation networks, one of which is at the Logung Dam, Kudus Regency, Central Java.
Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo said that the construction and rehabilitation will begin this year.
“This year, construction and rehabilitation of the 20-kilometer (km) tertiary irrigation network from the Logung Dam will begin to ensure an even water supply to the downstream areas,” explained Dody.
The dam, which has a capacity of 20.15 million cubic meters, was completed in 2018 and has been operational since 2019. The dam provides benefits for supplying water to the Logung Irrigation Area (DI) covering an area of 4,666 hectares.
The existence of the Logung Dam has so far been proven to increase planting intensity and agricultural productivity in Kudus and Pati Regencies.
“Dams are one of the key factors in providing water, but ensuring that water reaches the rice fields through an integrated irrigation network is also crucial,” Dody explained.
The Ministry of Public Works has also engaged PT Hutama Karya (Persero) to improve several national irrigation networks in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. This strategic project is believed to have an impact on increasing agricultural productivity and national food security.
EVP Corporate Secretary of Hutama Karya, Adjib Al Hakim said that the project carried out by Hutama Karya is an integral part of the Land Optimization Program (OPLAH) which supports the achievement of national food self-sufficiency as mandated in the Asta Cita of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
“This rehabilitation is not just an infrastructure improvement, but a strategic investment for Indonesia’s future food security. With improved irrigation networks, farmers can optimize cropping intensity and increase their land productivity,” Adjib concluded.
