Jakarta – The government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi), has confirmed that there are no plans to restrict internet-based calling services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), including WhatsApp Calls. Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, stated that the circulating information is false and has the potential to cause public unrest.
In her official statement, Meutya Hafid stated that the government has never planned, discussed, or even considered restrictions on WhatsApp Calls or other VoIP services. This issue is completely false and needs to be clarified to prevent it from becoming a misleading opinion.
“I emphasize that the government is not designing or considering restrictions on WhatsApp calls. The information circulating is incorrect and misleading,” said Meutya.
Meutya explained that her ministry had received various input from various parties regarding the development of the national digital ecosystem. Among the inputs received was discussion regarding the relationship between over-the-top (OTT) service providers, such as WhatsApp, and domestic telecommunications network operators. All of this input is still under discussion, and no final decisions have been made by the ministry.
“I understand the public’s concerns. I have asked the relevant authorities to clarify this and ensure that all policies support open digital access,” said Meutya Hafid.
The Minister of Communication and Digital emphasized that the government is committed to safeguarding the public’s freedom of digital access and continuing to support inclusive digital transformation. Therefore, every policy concerning digital services will be reviewed carefully, transparently, and with the involvement of various stakeholders.
