The Government Focuses Sumatra Flood Response on Sustainable Recovery
Jakarta – The government has emphasized that flood management in Sumatra is not solely focused on emergency response but also on sustainable recovery, encompassing infrastructure, social, economic, and environmental aspects. This approach aims to ensure that affected communities can recover holistically and develop greater resilience to future disaster risks.
President Prabowo Subianto stated that post-flood recovery must be carried out in an integrated and long-term manner, so that it not only restores the physical condition of the affected areas but also strengthens community resilience. The President emphasized that the government is committed to providing sustainable solutions to prevent similar incidents from recurring and to minimize their impact. “Disaster management must be directed at sustainable recovery so that communities can return to normal life and be better prepared to face future risks,” the President emphasized.
Following up on these directives, the government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), along with relevant ministries and local governments, continues to coordinate various recovery programs, from infrastructure repairs and the construction of temporary and permanent housing to restoring community livelihoods. All these steps are being implemented in an integrated manner to ensure a swift, targeted, and sustainable recovery process.
The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, stated that a sustainable recovery approach is the foundation for all stages of flood management in Sumatra. He explained that BNPB prioritizes the principle of rebuilding better and safer to reduce the risk of future disasters. “We are ensuring that recovery is carried out comprehensively, not only by rebuilding but also by increasing regional and community resilience to disasters,” he said.
The government emphasized that the focus on sustainable recovery is a concrete manifestation of the state’s commitment to protecting the people and ensuring development continues despite the challenges of disaster. With cross-sector synergy and support from all stakeholders, the government is optimistic that flood recovery in Sumatra will be effective and provide long-term benefits for affected communities.
