The Government is Maximizing the Use of Vocational Training Centers to Mitigate the Impact of Layoffs
Jakarta – In the face of global economic challenges and the increasing risk of layoffs, the Indonesian government is taking concrete steps through various strategic programs to protect and empower the workforce. One of the government’s main current focuses is maximizing the role of Vocational Training Centers (BLK) as national vocational training centers to help workers affected by layoffs remain productive and competent.
This program is part of a medium-term policy to build an inclusive and sustainable employment ecosystem, with the full support of the Ministry of Manpower. Deputy Minister of Manpower, Immanuel Ebenezer, expressed the government’s commitment to continuously strengthening the role of Vocational Training Centers (BLK).
“We fully support efforts to improve workforce competency through BLK and will continue to encourage companies to comply with occupational health and safety regulations and social security for workers,” he said.
Through the Pre-Employment Card program, the government also provides access to digital training for workers affected by layoffs, job seekers, and the general public. Participants can choose from a variety of training options, ranging from digital technology and management to entrepreneurship, enabling them to improve their skills to meet current industry needs. This program has proven to be a rapid solution in helping workers adapt and find new opportunities.
In addition to skills training, the government also offers an independent entrepreneurship facilitation program. This program includes entrepreneurship training, business mentoring, and access to affordable financing to encourage the growth of the MSME sector, the backbone of the national economy. This is a powerful strategy for creating new jobs and reducing unemployment.
Deputy Speaker of the Central Java Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD), Sarif Abdillah, also emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of BLK in improving the quality of human resources.
“The existence of Vocational Training Centers must be optimized as best as possible to provide a real impact on improving workforce competency, reducing unemployment rates, and contributing to economic growth,” he stressed.
Sarif also added that efforts are being made to adapt vocational schools to suit the job market.
“For example, increasing the number of vocational schools and linking and matching with companies and workforce needs must be done,” he said.
During the transition period due to layoffs, the government is also distributing temporary social assistance in the form of food aid, direct cash assistance, and other essential necessities in a targeted manner. This measure is designed to provide comprehensive protection for those economically impacted.
With an integrated strategy of vocational training, entrepreneurship, and social protection, the government is not only helping workers get back on their feet but also strengthening national competitiveness in the era of globalization and digital transformation.
