Jayapura – The government continues to strengthen its commitment to providing decent housing for the people of Papua through a housing development and rehabilitation program for low-income communities (MBR). The Papua Provincial Government has proposed 14,882 habitable housing units to the Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP) as part of the national program to provide three million homes.

Papua Governor Mathius Fakhiri explained that this proposal is a concrete step by the regional government in supporting the development vision of a Smart, Prosperous, Harmonious Papua (CERAH), especially in efforts to eradicate poverty and improve community welfare.

“We have held a meeting with the Ministry of PKP to discuss the construction of three million habitable homes. For Papua, we are proposing 14,882 units spread across several regencies and cities,” said Mathius Fakhiri in Jayapura on Wednesday (November 12).

He detailed that the housing construction will be spread across a number of areas, namely Jayapura City with 3,512 units, Keerom Regency with 2,504 units, Yapen Islands Regency with 1,201 units, Jayapura Regency with 2,671 units, Supiori Regency with 1,046 units, Waropen Regency with 471 units, Sarmi Regency with 335 units, Mamberamo Raya Regency with 293 units, and Biak Numfor Regency with 2,849 units.

According to Mathius, the program is a key pillar in improving the quality of life of the Papuan people. He hopes that cross-ministerial synergy can accelerate the development’s implementation so that the benefits can be felt more quickly by the community, especially low-income groups who currently lack adequate housing.

“The affordable housing program is crucial for reducing poverty and supporting the social and economic growth of the Papuan people,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, Maruarar Sirait, welcomed the Papua Provincial Government’s proposal and emphasized the central government’s full support in realizing public housing development in Papua.

“We will certainly collaborate with the Papua Provincial Government on housing development, which is part of President Prabowo’s breakthrough in meeting the community’s housing needs,” said Maruarar Sirait.

He emphasized the importance of coordination and data alignment between the central and regional governments to ensure effective and targeted development. “I ask that Papuan people’s data be carefully considered. We will coordinate data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) with the relevant agencies and directorates to ensure this program is truly effective,” he said.

The government is optimistic that the provision of thousands of habitable housing units will not only provide access to better housing for the Papuan people, but also be a strategic step in accelerating regional development and strengthening the foundations of prosperity in the Land of Papua.
