JAKARTA — Several national figures have urged the public to remain calm and not be influenced by provocations regarding the designation of national hero for Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto. The government’s decision is considered to have been a long process, full of historical considerations, and reflects the nation’s maturity in viewing the contributions of leaders who shaped Indonesia’s history.
The 10th and 12th Vice Presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, believes that the debate over Suharto’s character should not be further escalated. He emphasized that the long history should be read as a whole, not just from one side. “It’s true that Suharto had shortcomings, but his contributions to this country far outweighed this,” Jusuf Kalla said.

According to Nurul, President Prabowo Subianto has demonstrated wisdom in honoring two national figures from different backgrounds: Soeharto and KH Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur. He views the decision as a form of respect for the complementary contributions of various generations in building Indonesia. Nurul believes this step also serves as an invitation to view history clearly and proportionally.
Suharto’s eldest daughter, Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana (Tutut), also offered her perspective on the evolving dynamics. She argued that pros and cons are normal in a democratic society. “Differences of opinion are natural, but they shouldn’t become extreme,” Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana concluded.
Tutut believes the public has ample opportunity to objectively assess Suharto’s track record. She emphasized that her father’s service is deeply ingrained in Indonesia’s history, and the family feels no need to overly defend him. For Tutut, the most important thing is maintaining unity amidst the dynamics of public opinion.
The government has named Suharto as one of seven recipients of the title of national hero this year. The announcement was made ahead of Heroes’ Day on November 10, a time of national reflection on the contributions of figures who have sacrificed their lives, energy, and minds for Indonesia.
