The Worker Subsidized Housing Program is Evidence of the State’s Presence for Workers

Jakarta – The subsidized housing program for laborers and workers continues to show positive progress. High enthusiasm from workers has prompted the government to significantly increase the quota. Previously, the quota was only 20,000 units, but this figure has now been increased to 50,000 units to meet the workers’ housing needs.

Minister of Housing and Settlements (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, stated that this decision was the result of collaboration across ministries and agencies. He emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing concrete policies that directly benefit the workforce.

“BP Tapera Commissioner Heru Pudyo Nugroho requested an additional quota for subsidized housing, and I consulted with the Minister of Manpower, Yassierli. The Minister proposed an increase from 20,000 units to 50,000 units. I immediately agreed,” said Ara.

He further revealed that the program has shown very encouraging results. Three months ago, the government signed a quota of 20,000 subsidized housing units for the workforce. To date, according to data from the Public Housing Savings Management Agency (BP Tapera), 36,629 housing units have been realized.

“This means that this housing policy is highly sought after by workers. The government will continue to ensure the availability of affordable, livable housing,” he added.

Workers’ enthusiasm for this program is also reflected in the broader plans of the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI). KSPSI President Andi Gani Nena Wea stated that his organization will announce the launch of the Workers’ Housing Program in Cikampek, Karawang, in early September.

This subsidized housing complex differs from the usual simple housing concept. Designed in a resort style, the workers’ housing is offered at around Rp160 million, complete with modern amenities such as a jogging track, gym, swimming pool, and multi-purpose meeting room.

“Workers don’t just need wages, but also a sense of security. With strong social protection, workers can be more relaxed and productive. This is what we continue to fight for,” Andi Gani emphasized.

Support for this program also comes from the local government. The Acting Head of the Lebak Regency Manpower Office (Disnaker), Rully Charuliyanto, revealed that his office has conducted direct outreach to companies through the Human Resource Development (HRD) department.

“We have met with the company’s HRD to convey information about this program, and they will then pass it on to the workers,” said Rully.

He added that the subsidized housing program for workers is highly relevant to the conditions of workers in the region, who often face economic challenges due to unstable incomes. Although the official quota for Lebak has not yet been announced, he is optimistic that many workers will be helped.

“This program will be a real solution so that workers can have decent housing, not just rent for life,” he said.

With increased quotas and support from labor unions and local governments, the labor subsidized housing program is projected to be one of the policies with the greatest direct impact on worker welfare. Beyond simply providing housing, this initiative also demonstrates the state’s commitment to ensuring the social welfare of workers in Indonesia.
