TNI Denies Puncak Regent’s House as Post, OPM Burning Action Cannot Be Justified
Jayapura – Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih denied the accusations of the West Papua National Liberation Army–Free Papua Organization (TPNPB–OPM) stating that the TNI used the Puncak Regent’s house and the Omukia District Office as military headquarters. The accusation was made after the separatist group burned down two buildings in the Omukia area, Puncak Regency, Central Papua, on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
Head of Information for Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih, Colonel of Infantry Candra Kurniawan confirmed that the OPM group had burned down several buildings in Ondugura Village, Omukia District. One of the buildings that was burned down was the house that was once occupied by Puncak Regent Elvis Tabuni.
“It is true, OPM has burned down houses in the Omukia District area, Ondugura Village. One of the information obtained is the house that was once occupied by the Puncak Regent,” said Candra in a written statement.
However, Candra emphasized that the OPM’s claim that the house and district office were used as TNI posts was not true. He said that the burning by OPM could not be justified under any pretext.
“It is not true that the TNI used the Puncak Regent’s house and district office as TNI headquarters and posts,” he said.
According to Candra, the TNI’s actions were actually a response to the burning carried out by the separatist group. The TNI continues to carry out its duties to maintain security and protect civilians in the area.
Previously, TPNPB-OPM spokesman Sebby Sambom claimed that his party was responsible for burning the Puncak Regent’s house and the Omukia District Office. He said the action was carried out because the OPM considered the two buildings to have been used as military posts by the government.
However, this statement was directly denied by the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Command. Candra emphasized that the TNI has never used civilian houses or facilities for military purposes and always upholds protection for civilians.
Until now, the security situation in Omukia District is still being closely monitored by joint officers. The TNI continues to coordinate with regional stakeholders to ensure the stability and security of local communities.
