The central government is taking strategic steps to reduce energy consumption amid the impact of the global crisis caused by the conflict in the Middle East. This policy was announced by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto and will take effect in April 2026.

Airlangga stated that the government is implementing work from home (WFH) for civil servants (ASN) one day a week, specifically every Friday.

“The implementation of work from home for civil servants in central and regional government agencies will be conducted one working day a week, namely every Friday,” he said.

He explained that this policy aims to promote digital-based services and draws on post-pandemic experiences. In addition to ASN, a similar scheme will also be implemented in the private sector according to the needs of each sector.

“The implementation of work from home for the private sector is further regulated in a Circular Letter from the Minister of Manpower,” he said.

To reduce energy consumption, the government is also limiting the use of official vehicles to 50 percent and encouraging the use of public transportation.

“Mobility efficiency includes limiting official vehicles to 50 percent, except for operational purposes and electric vehicles,” said Airlangga.

Restrictions also apply to official travel, with reductions of up to 50 percent for domestic travel and 70 percent for international travel.

“Then, efficiency in domestic official travel up to 50 percent and international travel up to 70 percent,” he said.

Additionally, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program will be optimized to five days a week while still prioritizing certain regions.

“This program is aimed at providing fresh meals for five days a week,” said Airlangga.

He noted that this policy has the potential to save up to Rp20 trillion in the budget.

Secretary General of the MPR RI, Siti Fauziah, stated that her office is also implementing WFH and WFA policies starting April 1, 2026.

“In response to this call for cost-saving measures, we at the MPR are implementing WFH and WFA,” said Siti.

She explained that work arrangements will be four days a week with an on-call system on Fridays.

Siti added that restrictions are also being imposed on electricity usage within the office premises, with power cuts beginning at 6:00 PM.

“Starting from then, at 6:00 PM, we begin the power cuts,” she said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia assured that national energy reserves remain secure.

“All of our fuel reserves are above the national minimum standard,” said Bahlil.***
