The Christmas and New Year holidays (Nataru) are always a highly anticipated time for many families. This is the time when millions of people travel to return home for Eid, vacation, or simply gather with loved ones. However, amidst this increased mobility, the burden of costs often presents a challenge. The good news is that this year the government has again introduced various pro-people policies in the form of toll discounts, more affordable transportation prices, and improved mobility services that are increasingly inclusive. These policies are not only a breath of fresh air for the public, but also demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring that Nataru is a safe, comfortable, and affordable time.

Toll discounts are one of the most appreciated policies by the public. With reduced fares on several strategic toll roads, families traveling by road can now more freely choose their destinations without having to worry too much about costs. This policy has proven effective in reducing transportation costs, especially for those traveling long distances using private vehicles. Furthermore, toll discounts also have a positive impact on traffic flow, as the public is encouraged to choose travel times outside peak traffic, thus ensuring a more equitable distribution of vehicles. This demonstrates that the discount policy is not merely an economic incentive, but also a smarter and more humane traffic management strategy.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the tariff cuts will be applied to 26 toll roads. The range is 10% to 20% across the 26 toll roads: 2 for Greater Jakarta, 9 for Trans-Java, 3 for Non-Java, and 12 for Trans-Sumatra. With these measured and widespread tariff cuts, the public can now experience significant savings, especially for those traveling long distances to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their families. This measure is also expected to boost national economic growth at the end of the year.

In addition to toll roads, the availability of affordable transportation modes, whether by land, sea, or air, demonstrates the government’s commitment to helping the public. Additional train schedules with promotional fares, the availability of low-cost intercity buses, and various special pricing offers on sea transportation further facilitate public mobility. This affordable fare policy is especially important for families traveling in large groups or with children.

The government’s efforts to improve mass transportation services are also a key part of the overall mobilization strategy for the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holidays. Modernizing the bus fleet, improving terminal facilities, and integrating interregional transportation modes provide a significantly better travel experience compared to previous years. These policies demonstrate the government’s focus not only on public funding but also on the quality of public services. Improved infrastructure ensures that holiday travel is not only cheaper but also safer and more efficient.

These policies also have significant social impacts. By reducing travel costs, families from all economic backgrounds have greater opportunities to celebrate holidays together. Many parents can finally take their children home, visit grandparents, or enjoy tourist destinations without worrying about transportation costs. These precious moments together undoubtedly strengthen emotional bonds within families and build lasting positive memories.

From a macro perspective, the government’s move to offer toll discounts and affordable transportation also provides a much-needed economic stimulus. Money circulation during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period is consistently high, particularly in household consumption, tourism, and MSMEs. Transportation cost reductions encourage people to spend their funds on other necessities, such as culinary delights, souvenirs, or tourism activities. This undoubtedly impacts regional economic growth. In other words, this transportation policy not only provides convenience for the public but also helps drive the national economy.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated that the economic stimulus rolled out by the government at the end of the year was an effort to maintain purchasing power and increase mobility. Furthermore, this policy will help curb national inflation, particularly in the transportation sector.

This policy reflects strong synergy between the central government, regional governments, and transportation and toll road operators. This collaboration demonstrates a governance model that is responsive to public needs, particularly as national mobility peaks. The government is able to understand public aspirations and translate them into concrete solutions that directly impact citizen well-being.

Toll discounts and affordable transportation are not merely technical programs, but rather symbols of the government’s commitment to the people. This policy demonstrates the government’s concrete presence to ensure every citizen enjoys equal rights to move around, socialize, and celebrate the holidays with joy. With a collaborative spirit and a commitment to prioritizing public service, Indonesia is increasingly prepared to welcome a safe, festive, and blessed Christmas and New Year holiday season for the whole family.
