Visiting State Palace, Pope Discusses Peace Issues With President Jokowi
Jakarta – Pope Francis held an official meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the State Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (4/9/2024). This visit is part of the Pope’s apostolic journey series aimed at strengthening interfaith dialogue and promoting global peace.
The meeting was attended by a number of high-ranking officials from both sides. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, President Jokowi welcomed Pope Francis with great respect.
The discussion between the two leaders focused on various important issues related to world peace and regional stability, with an emphasis on Indonesia’s role as a Muslim-majority country that has made a major contribution to efforts to create global peace.
In his remarks, Pope Francis expressed his admiration for the diversity and tolerance that exist in Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue as a means to overcome conflict and build bridges of understanding between cultures.
“Indonesia is a living example of how diversity can be a strength and a source of peace. We must continue to work together to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to live in peace and harmony,” the Pope said.
President Jokowi welcomed the message and expressed his commitment to continuing Indonesia’s efforts to promote tolerance and peace.
“We believe that through international cooperation and dialogue, we can overcome complex global challenges. Pope Francis’ visit is a valuable opportunity to strengthen our resolve to advance peace and prosperity,” President Jokowi said.
In addition to discussions on peace, the meeting also included talks on humanitarian issues and climate change, which are considered urgent global challenges. Pope Francis and President Jokowi agreed that collaboration between countries and the international community is essential to achieve sustainable solutions.
The visit ended with a group photo session and a state lunch. Pope Francis will continue his visit to several other countries in Asia before returning to the Vatican.
