Wanting Elections to Be More Effective and Efficient, DPD RI Members Discuss Multi-Level Simultaneous Implementation

37

Members of the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) are planning for the implementation of General Elections (Pemilu) to take place simultaneously and in stages. This is because there is a desire to make the democratic party event in the country run much more effectively and efficiently than before.

When the implementation of democratic parties and political contestation, namely elections, can run much more effectively and efficiently, then of course this will also have a very positive impact on Indonesia, including on the quality of this nation’s leaders in the future.

Because, starting from the preparation, implementation to the post-election event itself, all of them will certainly contribute more or less to democratic life in the country, with simultaneous and staged events, it will be possible to create a more effective and efficient General Election.

Therefore, one of the DPD RI members from the Province of West Sumatra (Sumbar), KH Muhammad Nuh also responded to the conditions after the Presidential Election event last February, which has now also become the momentum ahead of the Regional Head Election (Pilkada) in November next 2024.

The desire to create a more effective and efficient democratic event is very strong, so one way is to maximize public supervision and optimize the security apparatus.

If this works, it is not impossible that the potential or possibility of fraud can be prevented properly. Direct supervision from the community is also important.

Apart from that, the implementation of General Elections (Pemilu) simultaneously and in stages is actually one of the methods so that political contestation takes place more effectively and efficiently than before.

With the democratic party process running simultaneously according to the level of government, namely for legislative members and the president there is their own schedule, then there is also a regional level with its own schedule, which is an example of a scheme to hold elections simultaneously according to the level of government and in stages or tiers. .

When this happens, it is not impossible that the political contest will be even more optimal and will be less tiring or even minimize the possibility of casualties.

Until now, Indonesia is actually in the realm of democracy which continues to experience processes and move smoothly, therefore, all parties should remain open-minded about the possibility of change and should not have the stigma that it seems as if the current method is permanent.

Moreover, this discourse is also very much in line with the government’s proposal through the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian who spoke about redesigning the General Election system in Indonesia. He admitted that he agreed with the redesign of the Election Law (UU).

The Indonesian government continues to make efforts to carry out revisions so that there can be improvements to the election system in Indonesia and also continues to improve the nation’s democratic climate. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a discourse to carry out a redesign at both the central and regional levels, where one option might be to implement a separation between the presidential and legislative elections.

In the Working Meeting (Raker) between the Minister of Home Affairs together with Commission II of the People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), there was encouragement to further strengthen the presidential system in the country.

The commitment to continue to make improvements by improving, namely to create a climate of democracy through the implementation of General Elections that is much more effective and efficient is manifested from the attitude of the Government through the Ministry of Home Affairs which strongly approves of the proposal to redesign the democratic party in Indonesia.

Even so, the Ministry of Home Affairs still has to continue to carry out many discussions, namely through group discussion forums (FGD) with a number of other related parties or stakeholders.

The discussions that will take place from the government will certainly not only involve a few parties, but actually all parties and elements, starting from academics, practitioners, election observers to NGOs, the DPR, KPU and Bawaslu.

The new system that will come will clearly bring good to this nation, including all regions in Indonesia, because the improvements or discourse on redesigning the elections reflects or is the result of learning from various previous experiences during the General Election or Pilkada.

Because many parties, including the government, really want the implementation of elections to be much more effective and efficient than before so that there will be an improvement in the democratic climate in Indonesia, this means that the discourse on holding general elections including regional elections simultaneously and in stages continues to roll out and will continue to undergo review by inviting many stakeholders.
