Widespread Support: Society Unites in Backing Soeharto as National Hero
Jakarta – Support for awarding the title of National Hero to Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, continues to grow across various segments of society. Religious leaders, academics, and community organizations alike recognize Soeharto’s significant contributions to the nation, viewing the designation as an official acknowledgment of his role in maintaining national stability and laying the foundations for Indonesia’s progress.
Ahmad Fahrur Rozi (Gus Fahrur), Chairman of PBNU, expressed his support for the Ministry of Social Affairs’ submission of Soeharto’s name, alongside Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), to the National Titles Council. He emphasized that Indonesia must learn to appreciate leaders who have contributed to national unity and development.
“Pak Harto made major contributions to national stabilization and economic development. Under his leadership, Indonesia was recognized globally as one of Asia’s emerging economic powers, with well-planned development programs and high economic and security stability,” said Gus Fahrur.
Dadang Kahmad, Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, highlighted Soeharto’s long-standing service to the nation, both during the independence revolution and throughout his presidency.
“We support Pak Soeharto as a National Hero because he greatly contributed to the Republic of Indonesia, from the independence revolution to the development era,” Dadang stated.
He noted Soeharto’s role in the Serangan Umum 1 Maret 1949, a key event demonstrating his part in defending Indonesia’s sovereignty. Dadang also pointed to Soeharto’s achievements in achieving rice self-sufficiency and reducing population growth through the Family Planning program as concrete evidence of his successful leadership.
Academic support comes from Prof. Marsuki, a professor at Hasanuddin University, who affirmed that Soeharto’s decades-long dedication deserves historical recognition.
“Over more than 30 years of leadership, Soeharto guided the nation through difficult times. From food self-sufficiency and economic stability to improving public welfare, he clearly deserves the title of National Hero,” Prof. Marsuki said.
Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf confirmed that the nomination originated from the public and meets all administrative requirements.
“The proposal to grant former President Soeharto the National Hero title comes from the grassroots and has met the necessary criteria for submission to the Titles Council,” he explained.
This widespread support reflects the nation’s commitment to honoring past leaders. On the occasion of Heroes’ Day, society is encouraged to emulate Soeharto’s dedication as a way of paying tribute to his service and contributions to Indonesia.
