Jakarta – In the midst of increasingly complex social dynamics, the major challenge currently faced by the Indonesian nation is the increasing symptoms of intolerance in various levels of society. This condition is a serious warning for the future of national and state life, considering that Indonesia was built on the foundation of diversity, tolerance, and unity. Intolerance often thrives in the midst of ignorance and lack of understanding of diversity.

In addition, the rapid development of technology and social media currently provides both opportunities and great challenges. On the one hand, social media can be an effective means to voice the values of tolerance and spread positive narratives about diversity. But on the other hand, digital platforms are also fertile ground for the spread of hate speech, hoaxes, and intolerant propaganda that often mislead the public.

Deputy Chairperson of the MPR, Lestari Moerdijat said that in the era of rapid technological development, the challenges facing the younger generation today are disinformation and hoaxes that have the potential to divide national unity.

“The challenge arises because there is currently a gap between the level of public knowledge and the rapid development of information technology. So continue to hone the abilities we have so that we can adapt to the changes that occur,” said Lestari

This is where digital awareness is needed among the younger generation. Digital literacy is an important provision so that they are able to sort information critically and responsibly in using social media. The younger generation must be smart active users, who not only absorb information, but are also able to educate their surroundings.

No less important is the role of educational institutions, both formal and informal. Schools and campuses must be safe and conducive spaces for the growth of a spirit of tolerance. The educational curriculum needs to be directed to not only emphasize academic aspects, but also build character, empathy, and positive social values.

Intolerance can manifest itself in various forms, such as discrimination, prejudice, or violence against different individuals or groups. To overcome intolerance, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia is initiating the Love Curriculum, an educational initiative that aims to instill the values of love for God, fellow human beings, the environment, and the nation from an early age.

Director General of Islamic Education, Amien Suyitno, revealed that character education in Indonesia requires deeper innovation, one of which is through a more integrative and systematic approach in the curriculum.

“The Love Curriculum is not introduced as a new subject, but will be integrated into various existing subjects.” Amien said***
