Young Papuan Intellectual: Development Is a Right, Separatism Is Not the Solution
Papua – Charles Kossay, a young intellectual figure from the Papua Highlands, firmly stated that development is a fundamental right of all Papuan people and must not be hindered by separatist actions that disrupt social order and security. In his statement, Charles called on all elements of society to support the government’s efforts in realizing a peaceful, progressive, and prosperous Papua. He emphasized that separatism is not the answer to the challenges currently faced by the Papuan community.
“It is time for us, as Papuans, to unite and support the security forces in eradicating armed groups like the OPM, which have done nothing but spread fear,” Charles said.
He argued that OPM’s actions do not represent the aspirations of the Papuan people as a whole, but instead worsen the suffering of civilians. Therefore, public support for both the government and security forces is crucial to maintaining regional stability.
Charles also expressed his appreciation for the humanistic approach taken by the government in addressing issues in Papua. He stressed that law enforcement against separatist groups must continue to uphold human rights principles.
“We do not want violence to be met with more violence. That’s why the community must also take an active role in maintaining order and reporting any potential threats in their surroundings,” he added.
He further urged Papuans not to be easily swayed by provocative narratives spread by separatist groups. According to him, the propaganda promoted by OPM aims only to create chaos and instill fear among the people.
“Let us protect our common sense and remain critical. Don’t let false information divide our national unity,” Charles asserted.
As a representative of Papua’s younger generation, Charles stressed the importance of building a better future through education, economic development, and improved access to public services. He stated that such aspirations can only be realized if security conditions are stable and the people are united in supporting development.
He acknowledged that the government has demonstrated real commitment to Papua through various development initiatives, including infrastructure and basic services. Thus, supporting the role of the security forces in upholding the law in conflict-prone areas is vital to protect civilians.
The government, he added, remains committed to ensuring equitable development across Papua, including through dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution approaches.
