Differences in Views Must Be Conveyed Constitutionally to Maintain the Integrity of the State

Jakarta — Differing views on the government are considered an integral part of democratic life. However, criticism must remain within constitutional boundaries to maintain the stability and integrity of the state.

Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) spokesperson Muhammad Kholid emphasized that criticism and demonstrations are citizens’ rights guaranteed by the constitution. This was made in response to a statement by political observer Saiful Mujani, which recently drew public scrutiny for being perceived as aiming to overthrow President Prabowo Subianto.

According to Kholid, in a healthy democratic system, criticism is necessary as a form of oversight of government. He emphasized that freedom of expression, including through demonstrations, is a fundamental right protected by law.

“In a democratic state, criticism is permitted and necessary. Even demonstrations or protests as an expression of freedom of opinion and association are permitted and protected by the constitution and legislation,” Kholid said in Jakarta.

However, he cautioned that these freedoms are not unlimited. Any form of criticism must be expressed in a manner that complies with the law and does not violate applicable regulations. According to him, actions aimed at illegally overthrowing the government violate constitutional principles.

“Criticism is permissible; it’s a constitutional right. However, illegally overthrowing the government is not permissible; it’s unconstitutional,” he emphasized.

Kholid also added that differences of opinion, disagreement with policies, and criticism of leadership are normal dynamics in a democracy. However, all of these must be expressed through legitimate mechanisms and must not undermine the state order.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining constitutional boundaries and corridors as a shared responsibility of all elements of the nation. This is considered crucial to ensuring that the freedoms enjoyed do not lead to national instability.

“We believe that criticism, differences of opinion, and disagreement with government leadership must be conducted constitutionally. There are boundaries that must be maintained together for the sake of the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” he concluded.

This statement serves as a reminder that democracy not only provides space for freedom but also demands maturity in expressing aspirations responsibly.
