Saiful Mujani’s Statement Under Fire, Activists Say It’s Not Democratic Criticism and Has Potential for Treason

Jakarta — Political observer Saiful Mujani’s statement calling for the “overthrow” of President Prabowo Subianto has drawn a wave of criticism from various groups. Some believe the statement no longer falls within the realm of democratic criticism, but has the potential to lead to unconstitutional actions and even treason.

Activist Yulian Paonganan, also known as Ongen, believes the statement no longer falls within the realm of democratic criticism, but has the potential to lead to treason.

“Criticism is legitimate in a democracy. But if it calls for the overthrow of the government, that’s no longer criticism; it’s already treason,” said Ongen.

Ongen stated that calls for the overthrow of a legitimate government are a form of delegitimization of the results of the 2024 Election, which was held democratically.

He emphasized the importance of the public understanding the background to avoid misunderstandings in interpreting circulating statements. He also warned against political disappointment being turned into calls that could potentially weaken the legitimacy of the legitimate government.

“The public must understand the context. Don’t let political disappointment be turned into a call to overthrow the legitimate government,” he said.

He further warned that uncontrolled narratives risk triggering instability, especially if conveyed by figures with widespread influence in society.

David Febrian, Chairman of the Underground Troops (PASBATA), also assessed that the narrative conveyed by Saiful Mujani risks undermining the established democratic order. He emphasized that calls to overthrow the president outside of constitutional mechanisms are not legitimate criticism.

“Such statements have the potential to damage the democratic order and cannot be considered criticism in a democratic country,” David said.

David also urged all elements of society to remain united and not be easily provoked by misleading opinions.

“Criticism is necessary, but it must be responsible. Don’t incite conflict. The people are the ones who suffer the most,” he said.

Similarly, several parties also believe that the expression of aspirations in a democracy must remain within constitutional channels. Calls to overthrow the head of state without official mechanisms are considered dangerous for national political stability.

Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlements, Fahri Hamzah, reminded all elements of society not to give space to unconstitutional actions. He stated that democracy must be implemented within the framework of applicable law.

“Don’t give permission or space to unconstitutional actions. Because that will be dangerous,” Fahri concluded.
