Amidst increasingly complex global dynamics, energy issues have become a primary concern for many countries, including Indonesia. Geopolitical tensions stemming from war in the Middle East, fluctuating global oil prices, and increasing global energy demand have put significant pressure on the stability of energy supplies and prices. In this context, being wise in energy use is no longer merely an option, but an urgent collective necessity. Awareness of avoiding energy waste is a simple yet impactful step in maintaining national energy security while supporting environmental sustainability.

As a developing country with a large population, Indonesia certainly faces unique challenges in energy management. Energy demand continues to increase in line with economic growth, infrastructure development, and industrial and household activities. However, the government has demonstrated a strong commitment to maintaining energy availability amidst global pressure. Various strategic policies have been implemented to ensure a stable supply, including optimizing domestic resources and diversifying energy towards new and renewable energy sources. These efforts certainly need to be supported by active public participation through energy-saving practices.

Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communications, Muhammad Baron, stated that his company is promoting an energy-saving culture internally and inviting the public to participate in using energy more wisely. Wise use of energy, especially fuel oil (BBM) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is currently an urgent movement. This effort aligns with the recent directives of President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia to mitigate the war in the Middle East, which has impacted global energy supply lines.

Furthermore, wise energy use can begin with small things in everyday life. Turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient devices, and reducing the use of private vehicles are concrete examples that every individual can implement. While seemingly simple, if implemented collectively by millions of people, the impact will be significant in reducing national energy consumption. Furthermore, these habits can also help reduce household expenses, thereby providing direct economic benefits to the community.

Amidst global pressures affecting energy prices, consumptive and wasteful behavior can actually worsen the situation. When energy demand increases without being balanced by efficiency, the pressure on supply will increase. This has the potential to trigger price increases, ultimately impacting all levels of society. Therefore, awareness of wise energy use must become part of Indonesian culture. Energy education and literacy need to be continuously strengthened so that the public understands that every small action makes a significant contribution to national energy stability.

Meanwhile, Amanda Katili Niode, Director of The Climate Reality Project Indonesia, stated that the issue of wise fuel use should no longer be merely discourse, but rather a reality that must be lived. Her organization supports the campaign for wise fuel use. However, she also emphasized that “wise” does not mean rigid restrictions, but rather using energy consciously.

Furthermore, this momentum also presents an opportunity to accelerate the transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources. The use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower needs to be continuously promoted as sustainable alternatives. The public can begin adapting by utilizing simple technologies such as household-scale solar panels or the use of electric vehicles. This step not only helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions that impact global climate change.

The role of the younger generation is also crucial in promoting the energy-saving movement. As agents of change, young people have great potential to spread awareness through various platforms, including schools, communities, and social media. Creative campaigns about the importance of energy efficiency can be an effective means of building collective awareness. With an innovative and relevant approach, messages about wise energy use can be more easily accepted by a wide range of groups.

On the other hand, the business world also has a significant responsibility in supporting energy efficiency. The implementation of environmentally friendly technologies, optimization of production processes, and efficient energy use can help reduce the overall burden of energy consumption.
