Government Moves Quickly to Handle Earthquake Victims in Bali

The government moved quickly to deal with earthquake victims in Bali. The community was also asked to remain calm and support post-disaster recovery efforts.

Bali was rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, the earthquake occurred on Saturday, October 16 at 03.18 in the northwest of Karangasem Regency, Bali. The Indonesian Vice President Ma’ruf Amin expressed his concern over the earthquake that hit the island of the gods. Ma’ruf Amin also said the government would immediately take quick steps to help the earthquake victims.

Therefore, he asked BNPB to immediately take quick steps. He also requested that the TNI-Polri provide protection to the community. Ma’ruf also appealed to the public to be prepared in case of aftershocks.

The Head of the Bali Province BPBD, Made Rentin, said that there were two fatalities in Bangli Regency. Meanwhile, in Karangasem Regency, one person died. In addition, there were 7 residents who had broken bones.

 In Bangli Regency, the community felt a very strong shaking for 5 seconds. People panicked and ran out of their houses. Meanwhile, the damage to buildings caused by the earthquake is still being recorded. Made Renti said, out of 5 families or 4 people were buried and the team managed to save and have been evacuated to the nearest Puskesmas. While the other 4 souls managed to save themselves.             

 It was recorded that the earthquake in Bali damaged 90% of the houses in Ban village, Karangasem regency. This village became the location worst affected by the earthquake. In Ban village, it was recorded that one resident died when a building fell on them. The victim is Ni Luh Meriani, a three-year-old toddler.

 In addition to the victims who died, five residents suffered serious injuries in the form of broken bones and eight residents suffered minor injuries. In Karangasem itself, there are three sub-districts that were affected by the earthquake, namely Kubu, Rendang and Loaddem. BPBD is still calculating the damage to buildings and data on affected victims.

 The earthquake also caused landslides in Bangli Regency. As a result of the landslide, the evacuation of the dead victims is said to have experienced problems. The path to the location was blocked by landslides so that the evacuation was carried out via waterways using a boat through Lake Batur.

 The information obtained, the family house is right under the cliff of the brother hill, on the edge of Lake Batur. At the time of the incident, the victim who was asleep could not save himself.

 Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Lt. Gen. TNI Ganip Warsito conducted a survey of the earthquake locations in Karangasem Regency and Bangli Regency. Ganip also advised residents to remain calm and not panic. In addition, Ganip also requested that the community be trained and provided with education related to disaster literacy. He also hopes that siskamling activities can be carried out every night.

 To speed up the emergency response process, BNPB provided assistance to the local government in the form of 443 side dishes, 152 additional nutrition packages, 50 ready-to-eat food packages and 20 family tents for each local government, namely Karangasem Regency and Bangli Regency.

 Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs immediately moved to provide assistance to the victims of the earthquake on the border of Karangasem and Bangli, Bali province. The Ministry of Social Affairs also sent logistical assistance to disaster survivors in the form of food, 120 packs of ready-to-eat meals and 78 packs of children’s food after the incident.

 In addition, the Ministry of Social Affairs through the Directorate of Social Protection for Natural Disaster Victims (PSKBA) has taken a number of post-disaster support measures. In a written statement, the Ministry of Social Affairs said that the dispatch of emergency assistance officers, carried out an assessment at the disaster site with the Disaster Preparedness Officers (TAGANA) from Bangli Regency and Karangasem Regency.

 Tagana and social pillars also helped evacuate victims to safer places and coordinated all Tagana representatives throughout Bali to be deployed to the location.

 Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Tri Rismaharini made a working visit to two earthquake locations, in Bangli Regency and Karangasem Regency. During her visit, Risma provided logistical assistance and compensation to the heirs of the earthquake victims in the amount of Rp. 329,189,122

 Risma will also visit and provide compensation to the heirs of the victims who died in Trunyan Village, Bangli Regency and those who died in Ban Village, Karangasem Regency.

 The government showed its swift movement to help earthquake victims in Bali. This shows that the government is always there in an existing disaster.
