Jakarta – Observer on Global and Strategic Issues, Ambassador Prof. Imron Cotan assessed that every Political Party (Parpol) has the same space and opportunity to gain the most votes from voters in the 2024 Election.

“However, new political parties have relatively bigger challenges, starting from the formation process which is not easy, the costs are not cheap, as well as having to deal with electoral battles against political parties that have existed for a long time,” said Prof. Imron Cotan at the Moya Institute National Webinar with the theme “Challenges and Opportunities for New Political Parties in the 2024 Election”, Friday, 21 July 2023.

According to him, to cover this deficiency, the empowerment of local figures with national and global perspectives is needed to break the domination of the political elite which is piled up in big cities on the island of Java. The 2024 contest will open up those opportunities.

“Determination of the principle of “Think Nationally, Act Locally” in the recruitment of politicians can break down the domination of the political elite that has accumulated in Java Island, resulting in political diversification throughout the region,” he said.

Meanwhile, Perindo Party Daily Chairperson, TGB Zainul Majdi said, the big opportunity for new political parties in the current era of disruption is to reach the millennial generation and generation Z voters, whose numbers are very large.

“Young voters tend to want something new, they don’t want to be tied to the old standard. The meeting between the Presidential and Legislative Elections can be a challenge and an opportunity for the new political parties,” said TGB Zainul.

On the same occasion, the Executive Director of the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI), Djayadi Hanan revealed, based on studies since the 2024 Election, there were seven factors that influenced votes for political parties, namely having a figure covering all electoral districts; political party image; political party machine turnover; the ability to understand the map of competition between political parties; the charisma of the candidate at the local level; aware of the characteristics of voters; and election effects.

“New political parties should not depend on just one strategy to gain votes, but also need to be supported by a strategy that is suitable for the local level, by bringing in popular local figures,” he said.

On the other hand, the Secretary General of the Gelora Party, Mahfudz Siddiq stated, there are consequences for new political parties to accept the concurrent determination of the Presidential and Legislative Elections in 2024.

“When the issue of the Presidential Election strengthens, what is called a cottail effect appears. Political parties get votes from their support for the presidential candidate. Parties that do not have support for presidential candidates will face electability problems,” concluded Mahfudz.
