Repeating Previous Successes,  Indonesia  Successfully Holds  the 44th AIPA

Indonesia has successfully held the 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Assembly in 2023 and repeated the achievements of organizing previous international events. The success of this event was not only marked by the smooth running of the event, but also by the birth of a number of new agreements. 

It is known that a number of resolutions have been agreed upon by representatives of the Southeast Asian parliament in the 44th AIPA General Assembly, including the Draft Resolution to make ASEAN a better region. Deputy Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) DPR RI Sukamta said that during the AIPA session, representatives of the ASEAN Parliament agreed on three draft resolutions for a stable and prosperous ASEAN.

The three draft resolutions, namely, the first resolution to support inclusive economic growth for drug-free ASEAN. This is a follow-up to the ‘AIPA Council on Dangerous Drugs’ (AIPACODD) meeting in Bogor on 29 May-1 June 2023.

The second resolution, according to the Deputy Chairperson of the DPR RI Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), is Indonesia’s proposal related to mobilizing parliamentary action in promoting green jobs (environmentally friendly jobs) and skills to support a green economy transition.

The third draft resolution is the resolution proposed by Malaysia, which is an effort to address employment challenges related to unemployment faced by the younger generation and people who have lost their homes.

In the 44th AIPA session, the Southeast Asian parliament also agreed that ‘Young Parliamentarians’ would become the Special Committee for Young Parliamentarians. In this regard, Deputy Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) Putu Supadma Rudana explained that the AIPA Young Parliamentary Special Committee consists of each delegate representative under 45 years of age.

The legislator from Bali explained that the Young Parliamentarians’ scheme or mechanism has become something important, because previously it was probably just a side event. However, with this agreement, there has become a special committee in which the Young Parliamentarians are also actively involved

In addition, Indonesia itself, especially the DPR RI, actively encourages collaboration or cooperation with the ASEAN region which is more intensive to implement the concept of green economy in accordance with the theme being carried. In fact, with this meeting, various challenges regarding society, the environment and growth in the region will be properly resolved. This means that, Indonesia’s role here is very important because it creates positive impacts for the ASEAN region to the world.

The rare moment that Indonesia has shown to the world this time is a form of its commitment to give full attention to issues that are currently developing. Among them regarding democracy,  human rights , politics, economics, socio-culture, youth, the environment to the issue of gender equality.

The 44th AIPA Assembly meeting has resulted in active discussions by parliamentary representatives whose countries participate in discussing world problems and also trying to solve them. The discussion that took place at the AIPA Session this time also agreed that the role of parliament is more responsive to guarding the stability and prosperity of the Southeast Asian region by referring to the concept of a green economy.

The holding of the 44th AIPA meeting this time has brought Indonesia to become the prime mover in realizing ASEAN to become a united and strong region. All participants who participated in the 44th AIPA Session felt the positive impact provided by Indonesia through strengthening the active role of parliament in resolving various issues in the region and also globally. 

Appreciation also needs to be given to the DPRI RI to security forces such as the TNI/Polri to the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) who have made every effort to prepare as much as possible for all the needs of the 44th AIPA Session to be held in Jakarta in 2023. The mature concept and issues presented this time cannot be separated from the active role of the DPR RI in paying attention to and caring about the existing problems. The success of Indonesia as the host is indeed exemplary for other countries in the ASEAN region.

Indonesia’s efforts as the host in holding the 44th AIPA General Assembly cannot be taken for granted. All things have been done and endeavored so that the event of a meeting between council members from ASEAN countries can take place smoothly and safely.

The whole thing is for the sake of being able to further advance and obtain various kinds of agreements so as to be able to bring about a positive change for the progress of ASEAN itself in a much more significant way. Not to be missed, in the implementation of the session, there were many issues that were highlighted, one of which was related to the Young Parliamentarians of the AIPA, where the role of all young people in the decision-making process continued to be strengthened as a form of reflection on how the aspirations of all young people that is increasingly demanding relevance to progressiveness.

The implementation of an international event in the form of the 44th AIPA General Assembly which was chaired and made Indonesia the host, was successful and ran smoothly. This has made Indonesia an ASEAN country that cannot be underestimated at all, because it is able to repeat the leadership’s success in holding various international events and has also succeeded in bringing many good impacts to ASEAN.
