Synergy between TNI, Polri, and KPU is the Key to Security of 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections
Jakarta – Ahead of the 2024 simultaneous regional elections to be held on November 27, various state institutions continue to strengthen synergy to ensure the security and smooth running of the election process.
Head of the Indonesian Army Information Service (Kadispenad), Brigadier General Wahyu Yudhayana stated that the Indonesian Army has conducted intensive coordination with the General Election Commission (KPU) and the National Police in preparing for securing the regional elections. This step includes sending logistics to securing on voting day, with a special focus on vulnerable areas.
“The Indonesian Army together with the National Police and the National Election Commission are actively coordinating to ensure that security and preparations for the regional elections run smoothly. We are committed to maintaining stability, especially in areas that are indicated to have high potential for vulnerability,” said Wahyu in Jakarta.
This coordination has been regulated in a memorandum of understanding between the Indonesian Army and the National Police. The memorandum confirms the commitment of both institutions in preparing a comprehensive security plan and is ready to assist the National Election Commission in various situations that require the presence of security forces in accordance with the mandate of Article 41 of Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police. This synergy also includes the role of the TNI in assisting the distribution of Pilkada logistics to various regions in Indonesia.
“This is in accordance with the memorandum of understanding between the TNI and Polri, namely that the TNI Polri are ready to assist the KPU in various situations that require the presence of security forces in accordance with the mandate of Article 41 of Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Polri. Including assisting in the distribution of Pilkada logistics to various regions in Indonesia,” he added.
A similar thing was also conveyed by Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sumail Abdullah, that the synergy between the TNI, Polri, and KPU is very important to maintain security and stability during the election process.
“It is hoped that this strong synergy can create a safe and peaceful Pilkada and be resilient in facing various challenges,” said Sumail during a visit to Kodam III/Siliwangi to ensure the readiness of the apparatus in facing the Pilkada.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam), Budi Gunawan stated that the government has mapped vulnerable areas and anticipated potential security disturbances through a vulnerability index compiled by the Polri.
“This mapping is the basis for various parties in determining the right security strategy, especially in areas prone to conflict,” said Budi Gunawan.
In the 2024 Pilkada, the public will elect leaders in districts, cities, and provinces simultaneously. After that, the process of counting votes until the determination of the winner will be continued by the regional KPU, with the potential for disputes that can be resolved before the inauguration in February 2025. The synergy between the TNI, Polri, KPU, and various other institutions is expected to guarantee the security and order of the 2024 Pilkada. {}
