Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto expressed his confidence that his government will succeed in realizing food self-sufficiency in the next two years, precisely in 2026. Prabowo expressed this optimism on Monday, January 20, 2025, after receiving a report from ministers related to the food sector, although he did not reveal the contents of the report in detail.

“Before the second year of my term, Indonesia was already self-sufficient in food. The government will no longer import food,” said Prabowo, who expressed his commitment to realizing national food security in a short time.

This statement is in line with various policies that have been outlined to support the achievement of food self-sufficiency.

Food self-sufficiency has been one of President Prabowo’s main focuses, both during the campaign and after his inauguration. One of the main strategies that has been proposed is the creation of food estates, which are planned to include main commodities such as rice, corn, and cassava. With this plan, Indonesia is expected to increase domestic food production capacity and reduce dependence on imports.

Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, also shares the same optimism. He targets food self-sufficiency to be achieved within the next three years, faster than the initial projection. Efforts made by the Ministry of Agriculture include increasing agricultural productivity, developing agricultural infrastructure, and increasing the area of agricultural land.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Indonesia in 2024 recorded quite large food imports, including rice, corn, and garlic. In that year, Indonesia imported 4.52 million tons of rice, which was the highest figure since 2018. In addition to rice, Indonesia also imports corn, soybeans, wheat, and other food ingredients to meet domestic consumption needs.

Along with efforts towards food self-sufficiency, the government is also focusing on strengthening the energy sector, which is one of the important aspects in realizing economic independence. Prabowo is targeting energy self-sufficiency in less than five years, which is expected to reduce dependence on imported fuel oil (BBM) and strengthen national energy security. Indonesia is also focusing on clean and renewable energy transformation, which is in line with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and maintain environmental sustainability.

The government continues to be committed to improving national resilience through strategic steps in various sectors, including food and energy. With various policies and programs that have been implemented, President Prabowo Subianto hopes that Indonesia can realize food and energy independence in the not too distant future. Through this effort, it is hoped that Indonesia can become a more independent, modern, and prosperous country for all its people.
