Teluk Bintuni – The government is focusing on efforts to achieve national food self-sufficiency, as in the Papua region. On various occasions, the government has emphasized the importance of synergy between environmental management, food security, and regional characteristics to ensure the sustainability of the food self-sufficiency program, including considering local wisdom.
One real example of the implementation of the food self-sufficiency program at the regional level can be seen in Teluk Bintuni Regency. The Regency Government together with the community harvested rice in Waraitama Village, Manimeri District.
Teluk Bintuni Regent, Yohanis Manibuy through Assistant III of the Teluk Bintuni Regional Secretariat, Yohanis Manobi, emphasized that the agricultural sector is a priority for regional development.
“The development of the agricultural sector, especially rice crops, has a strategic role in increasing food security and the community’s economy. This is not just a matter of food production, but also has a major impact on regional income and job creation,” he said.
The food self-sufficiency program in Teluk Bintuni is also in line with the national vision.
“This program is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita Pembangunan vision which emphasizes food, energy, and water independence, as well as strengthening the creative, green, and blue economy,” continued Yohanis.
Global geopolitical conditions are also the reason for the increasing urgency of the success of the food self-sufficiency program. Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, emphasized that Papua is ready to take concrete steps regarding the import tariff and import duty policy imposed by US President Donald Trump of 32 percent against Indonesia, although it is still being evaluated.
“Regarding the implementation of import tariffs and import duties, there has been no policy from the central government regarding what must be done. However, according to President Prabowo’s direction, how do we increase food self-sufficiency,” said Ramses.
He added that strengthening domestic production is the key to facing external pressures.
“What we need to boost is how to increase food self-sufficiency, especially in the agricultural sector. The one who made the export policy was only America, while our fish exports include Japan, Korea, China and Europe,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, emphasized that the success of the green economy and food self-sufficiency can only be achieved if all regions of Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke, have the same goal in environmental control.
To that end, the central government has completed the Environmental Protection and Management Plan (RPPLH) as a national strategic guideline.
“We are grateful that today, the Environmental Protection and Management Plan (RPPLH), its government regulations have been signed by all relevant ministers. We are waiting for the numbering and after that we will conduct socialization,” he said.
