Jakarta — President Joko Widodo said that the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN Summit) Summit had been held.

President Jokowi conveyed this on Thursday (7/9) during a press conference to media crew in the Cenderawasih Room, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Convention Hall. Also accompanying President Jokowi were Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto.

“Thank God, the 43rd ASEAN Summit and other summits were carried out well and smoothly, even in the midst of a difficult situation, Indonesia’s chairmanship achieved many things as an effort to maintain regional stability and prosperity,” said the President.

He continued that every leader present at the ASEAN Summit has a responsibility not to create new tensions. At the same time, added President Jokowi, every state leader also has a responsibility to reduce heated tensions, melt the frozen atmosphere and create space for dialogue.

The Head of State also reminded that the world will be destroyed if the conflict continues to be brought and attracted to other places. Therefore, each party must be able to manage rivalry so that destruction does not occur.

Not only that, President Jokowi also revealed that the world currently needs a neutralizer in the midst of various uncertain global situations. Therefore, ASEAN is needed to become a stabilizer.

“I assure you that ASEAN is on the right track to be able to carry out its role as a contributor to stability and peace as well as the epicenter of growth,” said the President.

President Jokowi also said that a number of agreements had been reached among state leaders. One of them is the East Leader Joint Statement.

“After going through a long and difficult process, we succeeded in agreeing on the East Leader Joint Statement regarding the Epicentrum of Growth, once again this was not an easy process, the geopolitical tug-of-war was very strong, but thank God a consensus was reached.” President Jokowi said

Furthermore, the President also stated that ASEAN was consistent in ending the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. Among them through 5 Point Concencus.

“ASEAN will continue its efforts, Indonesia through its chairmanship has conveyed 5 steps to help Myanmar, one of which is through the formation of the Troika mechanism.” The President concluded.

The same thing was also conveyed by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi who assessed that a number of new agreements had been made. Apart from that, the pillars to support ASEAN as the Epicentrum of Growth have also been strengthened.

He considered that Indonesia had pushed for a peaceful solution. However, this requires the support of all parties to make this happen.

“Mr President in his speech said that all of us convey the importance of peace, we really want it, now it’s just a matter of how we achieve what we want,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
