The 19th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) officially concluded in Jakarta, culminating in the adoption of the Jakarta Declaration, which affirms the collective commitment of OIC member parliaments to promote global peace, combat Islamophobia, and uphold universal human rights.

The 19th PUIC session was attended by 9 parliamentary speakers, 14 deputy speakers, and several international organizations serving as observers. In total, approximately 450 participants from 37 OIC member states were present.

“Alhamdulillah, this session also marks the 25th anniversary of the PUIC, making this 19th session a celebration of our silver jubilee,” said Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Thursday (May 15).

During this historic moment, Indonesia officially assumed the mandate as the new PUIC Chair.

“It is an honor — especially as, for the first time, the Speaker of the parliaments of Islamic countries is a woman. This is a source of pride for all of us,” Puan emphasized.

She also noted that she had held over ten bilateral meetings with fellow member states to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation.

“We agreed to deepen and enhance parliamentary ties and foster synergy between parliaments and governments,” she added.

One of the key outcomes of the session was a strong reaffirmation of the two-state solution for Palestine and Israel, along with the urgent call to open humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip.

The Jakarta Declaration also underscores the importance of leveraging the Islamic world’s soft power through education, women’s empowerment, and youth engagement.

While reading the declaration, Chairman of BKSAP DPR RI Mardani Ali Sera emphasized the importance of fighting Islamophobia:

“We call on PUIC member parliaments to actively combat Islamophobia, xenophobia, and all forms of intolerance by demonstrating the values of Islam as rahmatan lil-alamin (a mercy to all creation). We also promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue within parliamentary platforms,” he said.

The PUIC also reaffirmed the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and reconciliation based on the OIC Charter and international law.

“This reflects the Islamic value of shoora — consultation and mutual deliberation,” Mardani stated.

The closing of the 19th PUIC marks a strategic milestone for parliamentary diplomacy in shaping a more peaceful and inclusive world.
