Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) officially concluded on Thursday (May 15) at the Nusantara Building, Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta. Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) and newly appointed PUIC President, Puan Maharani, formally closed the international gathering attended by delegations from numerous member states.

In her closing speech, Puan emphasized that the Jakarta Declaration, produced from the conference, reflects the collective determination of Islamic nations to uphold global justice, strengthen governance, and reinforce the role of women in the development of the Islamic world.

“The Jakarta Declaration that we have produced is clear proof of the collective voice of Islamic world parliaments. We have agreed to fight for justice for Palestine, enhance governance, empower the role of women, and promote a more just global order,” said Puan.

As the host country, Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the implementation of every resolution agreed upon. Puan also urged all delegations to carry the spirit of the Jakarta Declaration back to their respective parliaments as a symbol of solidarity among OIC member states.

“I invite all delegates to bring the spirit and substance of this declaration into your parliamentary sessions, as a shared commitment to strengthen the solidarity of OIC countries,” Puan stated.

Puan, who made history as the first female President of the PUIC, called on the collective strength of the Islamic world to serve as a positive force for global peace and prosperity. She also expressed her hope that the delegates left Indonesia with lasting positive impressions.

“Our legacy does not lie in the grand buildings we construct, but in the dignity we restore to every child, woman, family, and those who suffer from war, poverty, and injustice,” Puan declared.

The Jakarta Declaration, read by Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, outlined a new direction for inter-parliamentary diplomacy among Islamic countries. The document stressed the importance of cooperation in addressing global challenges and strengthening socio-economic resilience and inclusive parliaments.

“We have resolved to enhance inter-parliamentary cooperation, share knowledge, and build joint initiatives to tackle global economic challenges and strengthen more inclusive representative institutions,” Mardani stated.

One key point in the declaration was the encouragement to establish sustained dialogue among parliaments, including with legislative bodies from other regions such as the European Parliament and the United States Congress.

“PUIC encourages the establishment of regular inter-parliamentary dialogue channels, particularly with the European Parliament and the U.S. Congress, to jointly address the increasingly complex global challenges,” said Mardani.

The declaration also highlighted concrete cooperation in various strategic sectors such as education, scientific research, women and youth empowerment, intra-OIC trade, and advancements in technology and digitalization.

“We are not merely speaking about solidarity, but committing to real action. Investments in education, intra-OIC trade, and digitalization are concrete steps towards building resilience and self-reliance for the ummah,” Mardani affirmed.

With this official closing, the 19th PUIC Conference marks a significant milestone in Islamic parliamentary diplomacy, ushering in a new chapter for a more connected, empowered, and dignified Islamic world through sustained cooperation.
