AMM Meeting Generates Recommendations to Strengthen ASEAN in Facing Future Challenges

West Manggarai – ASEAN’s role is very important for regional peace, stability and prosperity. For this reason, Indonesia is pushing for a number of issues, including those related to the economy, socio-culture, defense to increasing regional connectivity.

This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting or AMM (ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting) in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)

According to Foreign Minister Retno, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers recommended to Leaders how to build a strong foundation for the future of ASEAN, a long-term vision, and a stronger ASEAN capacity to enable ASEAN to face future challenges.

Furthermore, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of ASEAN member countries also discussed updates regarding accession to the TAC, implementation of the 5PC, and effective implementation of the ASEAN Outlook in the Indo Pacific.

“I’m sure, together, we will achieve ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” said Foreign Minister Retno.

Retno said that this achievement must be the capital to build a stronger and more relevant ASEAN, where future challenges faced by ASEAN will be even greater, including in the Indo-Pacific.

Retno then emphasized the importance of implementing AOIP (ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific).

“This is why the implementation of the AOIP [ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific ], is becoming more important at this time. Therefore, we need to work harder, not business as usual,” said Retno.

Apart from that, Retno also encouraged Timor Leste to become a full member of ASEAN and continued to support Timor Leste to participate in all ASEAN activities.

Timor Leste also stated that it continues to be committed to supporting the ASEAN Way which is consistent with the principles of ASEAN Charter diplomacy.

Regarding the crisis situation in Myanmar, the Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) of the Republic of Indonesia, Teuku Faizasyah, stated that there had been progress in resolving the political conflict in Myanmar.

“We have provided humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and that includes progress,” Faizasyah told the media.

According to Faizasyah, all ASEAN countries have committed to resolving the political conflict in Myanmar.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, on various occasions continues to voice his voice so that the violence in Myanmar will stop immediately.

According to Jokowi, the current situation in Myanmar does not make any party win and only makes the people become victims.

“The people who will become victims because of this condition will not make anyone win. I invite us to sit together, create a space for dialogue to find solutions together,” said Jokowi.

President Jokowi also revealed that Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN this year is pushing for the implementation of a five-point agreement or Five-Point Consensus where one of the points is regarding humanitarian assistance.

The President conveyed that various efforts have been made by Indonesia through its chairmanship in ASEAN, including facilitating The ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre). []
