Beware of Demonstrations that Disturb Public Order

Jakarta – The government and security forces are preparing to face potential disruptions to public activities along with plans for a large-scale demonstration titled the 205 Grand Action which will be held by the Indonesian Online Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Association (GARDA) on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. This action will be carried out simultaneously starting at 13.00 WIB at the Merdeka Palace, the Ministry of Transportation Building, and the DPR/MPR RI Building, as well as a number of other strategic points in Jakarta.
This demonstration, although recognized as part of public expression, must still be carried out without sacrificing public order and the comfort of citizens. However, the public is urged to increase vigilance, avoid the location of the action, and replan daily activities to avoid congestion or discomfort.
The General Chair of GARDA Indonesia, Raden Igun Wicaksono, expressed his apologies for the potential disruption to community activities due to this action.
“Therefore, it is very likely that parts of Jakarta will be paralyzed due to long traffic jams, so we apologize in advance if there are people stuck in traffic jams and disruption to community activities,” said Igun.
In addition to taking to the streets, there will be a reduction in online transportation services so that people are advised to prepare alternative travel. This certainly requires public readiness to use alternative conventional transportation or arrange travel schedules in advance.
“Demonstration on May 20, 2025. We predict that the application service may be partially disrupted, and the public is advised to adjust their travel schedules,” continued Igun.
This action is a response to the dynamics of the relationship between drivers and applicators, especially in the interpretation of application rental rules, especially regarding application rental fees as regulated in the Decree of the Minister of Transportation KP 1001 of 2022.
The government itself has stated its commitment to maintaining public order and providing a safe space for the delivery of aspirations. Security forces will be deployed proportionally at key points to ensure that activities are peaceful and under control. This readiness is proof that the state is present in maintaining a balance between the right to express opinions and public order.
Meanwhile, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Transport Workers Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, requested that the cuts imposed by platforms on drivers be reviewed to be fairer.
“The far from decent working conditions are manifested in the form of exorbitant platform cuts of up to 70%,” said Lily.
With this dynamic in mind, the public is urged to remain calm and not be provoked. The government is also opening up a dialogue space to find a fair and sustainable solution.
However, the government through the security apparatus will not hesitate to take firm action against individuals or parties who try to ride on the action with the aim of disrupting public order or damaging public facilities. Preventive and anticipatory steps continue to be prepared to ensure that the situation remains conducive and the community can continue to carry out activities safely.
