JAKARTA – The government and the Indonesian House of Representatives have expressed their seriousness in handling the issue of Enggano Island, Bengkulu, following the issuance of the Presidential Instruction (Inpres) on the Acceleration of Development of Enggano Island. The complicated situation on this outermost island of Indonesia is currently under strict cross-institutional supervision, to ensure that the implementation of the Inpres runs quickly and effectively.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said that the government’s response to the Enggano issue was a reflection of President Prabowo Subianto’s new leadership style which prioritizes speed and collective work.

“We are completing Enggano Island together, yes, this is what we can call the new style of government now, we are trying to be responsive,” said Prasetyo at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta.

He acknowledged that the dynamics of problems in society often occur unexpectedly, such as the shallowing of ports which now makes it difficult to access logistics distribution.

“With all kinds of problems, we cannot predict the occurrence of shallowing. So when there is an incident that is demanded by the community, we are a quick response from all levels, especially from the government,” he said.

Likewise, Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad emphasized that his party will continue to monitor the implementation of the Presidential Instruction. He considered the President’s step in issuing the Presidential Instruction as a form of commitment to the people in the outermost regions.

“We continue to monitor the implementation of this Presidential Instruction. Because we know, the people of Enggano Island have long faced serious infrastructure obstacles,” Dasco explained at the Jakarta parliament complex.

Dasco also asked all parties not to blame each other, and to focus more on real work to solve problems in the field.

“Now is the time for concrete work, not accusing each other. The DPR is ready to oversee its implementation,” he said.

The government hopes that the implementation of the Presidential Instruction can restore access to logistics distribution, revive the economy, and restore the quality of life of Enggano residents as a whole.
