Jakarta – The government continues to explore the use of nuclear technology as part of its strategy to achieve reliable, clean, and affordable national energy self-sufficiency. This step is being carried out through synergy between ministries and research institutions to ensure each stage is reviewed technically, regulatoryly, and socially for the safety and benefit of the public.

In this regard, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), together with the Indonesian Nuclear Society Association (HIMNI), is holding the 2025 Nuclear Science and Technology Symposium with the theme “Together with Nuclear, Building the Nation Towards Energy Sovereignty” in a hybrid format.

The Head of BRIN’s Nuclear Energy Research Organization, Syaiful Bakhri, stated that this symposium serves as a forum for exchanging experiences and assessing the progress of nuclear power development in Indonesia. He also emphasized the importance of the energy sector and energy self-sufficiency for national sovereignty and prosperity.

“This activity serves as a gathering place for stakeholders who want nuclear power to advance and improve our collective prosperity,” said Syaiful.

Syaiful hopes that the construction of Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) will be key to the energy transition by 2060.

“According to information, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) will be built in Bangka and West Kalimantan in 2032, each with a capacity of 20 MW. Hopefully, this will be a starting point for us all to begin this development,” he said.

“BRIN urgently needs collaboration with various parties to build Indonesia’s first nuclear power plant, a safe and secure nuclear power plant,” he added.

Meanwhile, BRIN Head, Laksana Tri Handoko, stated that with the synergy of human resources (HR) from researchers from various disciplines across various agencies, BRIN has a much more adequate supporting human resource capacity in the nuclear sector.

“We have researchers from materials science, AI, electronics, and informatics, all of whom support the nuclear sector, which is crucial in this modern era,” said Handoko.

Handoko also mentioned that the Indonesian Nuclear Society Association (HIMNI) is a key partner in developing communities and fostering a proper understanding of nuclear technology, thereby accelerating and realizing programs and the benefits of nuclear technology.

“Indonesia is a large country; we cannot live without nuclear technology. We must utilize nuclear technology optimally for the benefit, development, and prosperity of our people, nation, and country,” he concluded.
