Government Focuses on Building a Digital Ecosystem Free from Online Gambling
Jakarta – The government continues to show a strong commitment to creating a safe digital space free from online gambling practices.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) noted that as of mid-June 2025, two million online gambling sites had been removed from Indonesia’s digital space.
The Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, said that this figure was the result of intensive government efforts, but she emphasized that blocking sites was not the main step in eradicating online gambling.
“We have taken down two million online gambling sites. However, these sites can create new ones even automatically,” said Meutya.
She added that the most important strategy is to increase public awareness to actively reject the existence of these practices.
“Once again, this is an industry. If the enthusiasts or consumers want to continue, then there will continue to be room for them to develop, so we must also fight,” said Meutya.
As a form of regulatory strengthening, Kemkomdigi has implemented two important regulations: the Ministerial Regulation on Content Moderation Compliance System (Saman) and the Government Regulation on the Governance of Electronic System Implementation in Child Protection (PP Tunas).
Both aim to limit access for minors to digital platforms, which are vulnerable to being exploited by online gamblers.
“With the regulation limiting or delaying the age of access for children under 18 to social media, we hope that it can also significantly reduce online gambling in Indonesia, while also making our digital realm better,” explained Meutya.
The Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, also stated that his party had temporarily blocked the Internet Archive platform (archive.org) because it was found to contain gambling and pornographic content that violated the ITE Law.
“We have tried to communicate with the Internet Archive via official letter, but have received no response. So quick steps must be taken,” said Alexander.
He added that the blocking process was carried out after the stages of official communication, content analysis, and giving the platform time to respond.
Meanwhile, Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, said that the Ministry of Law is currently harmonizing the Government Regulation on the Eradication of Online Gambling.
“In essence, this PP emphasizes that prevention and enforcement efforts can be more optimal,” said Supratman.****
