Government Optimizes Solar Power Plants and Batteries to Accelerate Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta – The government continues to accelerate steps towards energy self-sufficiency through the optimization of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) and the development of battery technology on a large scale. This effort is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s grand vision to realize sustainable and inclusive national energy independence.

President Prabowo Subianto stressed that Indonesia needs a battery production capacity of 100 gigawatts per hour (GWh) to achieve energy self-sufficiency. He expressed his belief that the target is very possible to be achieved faster than previously predicted.

“One of our paths to energy self-sufficiency is electricity from solar power, and the key to solar power is batteries. I was told by experts that our nation can truly be energy independent. My calculation is that it won’t be long, at the latest six years,” said President Prabowo.

Furthermore, the President emphasized the importance of using the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in supporting the PLTS system, to ensure the continuity and stability of electricity supply from renewable energy. This is part of a major transformation towards clean energy that can reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

On the same occasion, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said that the government will expand battery production not only for electric vehicles, but also for energy storage from PLTS.

“God willing, our partners are willing to support this development so that all production components are carried out domestically,” said Bahlil, indicating support from investors and international partners to strengthen the national energy ecosystem based on domestic resources.

Meanwhile, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized PLN’s commitment to supporting energy equality through PLTS, especially in remote, outermost, and remote areas (3T).

“This program is not just about providing electricity, but also strengthening Indonesia’s position as a leader in the global energy transition. This is a form of national cooperation to realize a clean, green, and inclusive future,” Darmawan emphasized.

He explained that the 47 PLTS that have been inaugurated with a total capacity of 27.8 megawatts (MW) now provide electricity access to 5,383 households in 47 villages spread across 11 provinces.

“Now, electricity from clean energy changes everything. This is energy justice. PLN is ready to carry out the President’s vision towards energy independence through renewable energy acceleration,” Darmawan continued.

With synergy between the government, state-owned enterprises, and industry partners, Indonesia is taking a sure step towards national energy sovereignty. The massive use of solar power plants and batteries is believed to be the key to presenting a more independent, green, and equitable future for all Indonesian people.
