The holding of the ASEAN Summit at JCC Jakarta was covered by thousands of journalists from various media channels, both local and foreign. The local and foreign mass media play a role in overseeing the priority and strategic issues of the ASEAN Summit.

In 2023, Indonesia will become Chair of ASEAN in the midst of a very difficult global situation, where crises are hitting globally, such as the economic crisis, energy crisis, food crisis, war, which require strategic and concrete solutions. The election of Indonesia as chairman of ASEAN is proof that Indonesia has an important role and potential in realizing the goal of establishing ASEAN, namely creating a peaceful, safe, stable and prosperous Southeast Asian region. Apart from that, Indonesia is also believed to be very capable of playing an active role in facing various global challenges.

After previously Indonesia successfully held the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) last May, now Jakarta is hosting the 43rd ASEAN Summit which will take place from 5 to 7 September 2023.

President Joko Widodo once expressed his belief that ASEAN is capable of facing various current global challenges. For this reason, he firmly invited Heads of State/Heads of Government to work together to strengthen the unity of ASEAN countries, so that ASEAN would be able to become a central player in bringing peace and growth.

Of course, the success of an event cannot be separated from the participation of members of the press. Journalists and the media hold an important role and participation in disseminating information about the Chair of ASEAN to the whole community. Moreover, along with the advancement of information and communication technology, the development of communication media is also quite rapid so that it becomes a connecting tool that can help disseminate information.

In order to support the smooth work of journalists during the Summit series of events, the Government also provided a media center room with various equipment and facilities. The Director General of IKP of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Usman Kansong, explained that during the 43rd ASEAN Summit, the Ministry of Communication and Information provided a Media Center in Exhibition Hall B, which will be able to accommodate 2,500 people. In addition, the media center will provide bilingual releases, bilingual features and bilingual photo and video packs . There are also Clean Feed Broadcast, Bulletins, Press Briefing Journalists Technical Guidelines.

The Media Center is also equipped with an internet network from Telkom, 240 computer workstations + 240 LAN workstations with a dedicated 1.5 Gbps connection. Apart from that, there is also a dedicated International Distribution, Broadcast Center Dining & Hospitalities Area, 10 Office & Media Partners Booths (5×3 m), AV Editing booth, 1 on 1 studio, Multi Format Broadcast Conversion, Media Briefing Room with a capacity of 35 pax, Press Conference Room with a capacity of 300 pax with interpreters in five languages, and webcast or Live Streaming facilities.

Previously, the Communication Strategy Team for the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Dilla Amran said that priority issues at the ASEAN Summit required cooperation and collaboration of all parties to succeed, not only the role of the government. The media can raise these issues so that the public understands what was discussed at the ASEAN Summit meetings and invites the public to actively participate in these issues,

Director of Information Technology at Telkomsel, Bharat Alva, also on one occasion revealed that Telkomsel has always contributed to the holding of the 2023 ASEAN Summit in Indonesia, as one of the efforts to expedite the reporting of information on a series of activities from the ASEAN Summit.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit or ASEAN Plus (ASEAN+) 5-7 September 2023 in Jakarta was attended by ASEAN Leaders and Leaders of ASEAN Partner Countries and other international organizations.

The role and function of the mass media is very clear in being able to enter various aspects of people’s lives. The mass media is seen as a form of mass communication transportation, which can be defined as the dissemination of messages widely, rapidly, and continuously to large and diverse audiences in an effort to influence them in some way. The role and function of the mass media in the current era cannot be separated from the lives of the audience, it has become an important requirement in human communication.

With the support of ICT infrastructure facilities in the media center, it is hoped that it can assist media crews in their participation in the success of the 43rd ASEAN Summit at JCC Jakarta.
