One Year of Governance, Danantara Becomes a Pillar of SOE Efficiency for an Advanced Indonesia
Jakarta — Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan Roeslani, emphasized that the efficiency policies implemented by the Investment Management Agency Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara) have had a significant impact on the management of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) under the government’s umbrella.
“We have around 1,000 companies. Suppose each company has 5 commissioners; multiplied by 1,000, that amounts to 5,000 commissioners. But we save 500 million US dollars every year just by doing this,” he said.
The efficiency measures initiated by Danantara have become a major milestone in the one-year journey of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration.
By streamlining the number of SOE commissioners and eliminating bonuses or tantiems, this policy reflects the government’s strong commitment to realizing healthier, more transparent, and accountable state company governance.
Rosan explained that before the policy was implemented, several SOEs had excessive boards of commissioners, reaching up to a dozen or more members.
This situation not only burdened company finances but also created imbalances in the remuneration system, which did not align with performance and real contributions to the company.
“All SOEs must operate as companies with good governance, transparency, and responsibility. I see boards of commissioners that are not actual directors with 12, 13, even 14 commissioners,” he said.
Rosan considers this move a form of fairness because most commissioners only perform supervisory functions and are not directly involved in the companies’ daily operations.
He gave an example that many commissioners only attend meetings once a month, some even once every three months.
“Because they only hold meetings with the directors once a month. Even banks with strict operations only meet once every three months. So I told the President I wanted to reduce the number of commissioners,” he said.
Additionally, Danantara has abolished bonuses or tantiems for SOE commissioners, which previously reached up to 45 percent of directors’ bonuses.
The elimination of tantiems and the reduction in the number of commissioners also align with President Prabowo Subianto’s directives emphasizing efficiency and accountability in SOE management.
In his speech delivering the 2026 State Budget Bill and Financial Note, Prabowo criticized the practice of giving huge tantiems to commissioners as unreasonable and inconsistent with the spirit of economic reform.
“How can a commissioner who meets once a month receive a tantiem of 40 billion rupiahs a year? I abolished the tantiems. Directors don’t need tantiems if the company incurs losses, and profits must be genuine, not artificial,” Prabowo asserted.
