The separatist group Free Papua Organization (OPM) continues to wreak havoc and creates threats to civil society, especially Indigenous Papuans (OAP). So many people reject the existence of the OPM.
The government, through the security forces, is committed to taking firm action against the OPM which repeatedly commits criminal and violent acts in order to protect the Papuan people. Apart from that, the security forces are making serious efforts to enforce the law against OPM who commit criminal acts.
OPM is the most cowardly rebel group in the world. The reason is, their actions often hide behind society. They used cowardly methods, namely using women and children as shields to fight the security forces. Apart from that, acts of terror are often carried out by OPM to spread fear and worry among people in various regions in Papua. In its attacks, OPM often releases propaganda and slanders security forces with misleading narratives.
Most recently, OPM even carried out their very barbaric actions again by shooting dead civilians in Timida Village, East Paniai District, Paniai Regency, Central Papua. The victim targeted was a public transportation driver. What’s even sadder is that the Bumi Cenderawasih terrorist gang not only shot, but they also burned the victim’s public transportation.
The brutal actions carried out by OPM have also exceeded humanitarian limits. The Papuan people do not agree and do not accept all the actions taken by the OPM, because all the actions taken by the OPM always make the people anxious and hinder development in the Land of Papua. Therefore, the TNI-Polri security forces are committed to taking firm action against the OPM because they have committed a lot of violence and even murder against the public and security forces.
Kapendam XVII/Cenderawasih, Lt. Col. Inf. Candra Kurniawan said that currently security forces are continuing to chase OPM members who shot soldiers in Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains. The pursuit of the OPM member who carried out the shooting is part of the security forces’ efforts to respond to emerging threats in Papua. OPM has long been considered a separatist group operating in the Papua region and carrying out a series of actions, including shootings and attacks on civilians, security forces and destroying infrastructure.
The series of terror acts carried out by the OPM was not due to the lack of welfare carried out by the government in Papua. The government is actually increasing the development and welfare of the people in Papua. But the OPM really doesn’t like the development carried out by the government. Welfare development carried out by the government reduces the influence of these separatist groups on society. Because of this, the OPM group carried out terror and attacks on civilians. So under these conditions, the government continues to prepare steps, both soft and hard approaches to eradicate OPM.
The Papuan people strongly condemn all brutal actions and movements of the OPM, because they have damaged the foundations of harmony and peace in Papua. Therefore, the Papuan people fully support every effort made by the government through the security forces to take firm action against the OPM which is the source of chaos in the Land of Papua.
Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly, Bambang Soesatyo, fully supports the government’s steps through the TNI and Polri in enforcing the law against the OPM group. There must be no more tolerance for separatist, terrorist or OPM groups to terrorize and commit crimes that cause casualties. OPM’s actions are very dangerous because they often attack Papuans from civil society, teachers, health workers and even TNI-Polri security forces.
Apart from that, OPM’s actions have thrown Papua’s development framework off its proper track. When development stops, in the long term it will have an impact on problems with the welfare of the Papuan people, such as road access from one region to another. Accelerating development is one of the government’s focuses in encouraging equal distribution of prosperity and ensuring security in the Land of Papua. Several incidents of violence that occurred between the OPM and security forces and civil society made the government make special efforts to handle them.
For this reason, in dealing with OPM, the government has prepared a number of strategic steps and law enforcement in the hope that the OPM problem can be handled well. Apart from that, the government is also actively holding dialogue with the Papuan people to listen to their aspirations and needs. This dialogue is an important platform in formulating development policies and programs that are responsive to the interests of the Papuan people.
It is also hoped that the Papuan people will not be provoked by what OPM has done so far. The reason is, OPM is a group of cowards and liars, because their struggle to date has had no results and has only been a waste of time and energy.
The government has committed to addressing OPM through a comprehensive approach. By combining security and development, the government is trying to create safe and supportive conditions for the Papuan people. Through regional security, law enforcement, infrastructure development and community empowerment, the government seeks to achieve security and sustainable development in Papua. The role of all elements of society is urgently needed and must work together to help the government, TNI-Polri security forces in overcoming the series of OPM actions.
