Setya Novanto’s Release Complies with Regulations; Government Continues Anti-Corruption Efforts
Jakarta — The government confirms that the conditional release of Setya Novanto, convicted in the electronic ID card (e-KTP) corruption case, was carried out in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, emphasized that the policy followed a thorough assessment process and was based on the Supreme Court’s decision to grant the judicial review (PK).
“Yes, because it has gone through the assessment process and according to the judicial review examination, his sentence has exceeded the required time. It should have been on the 25th,” Agus stated.
Agus explained that the Supreme Court had previously approved Setya Novanto’s judicial review request, reducing his sentence from 15 years to 12 years and 6 months in prison, with a fine of IDR 500 million and a subsidiary six-month imprisonment. Additionally, the political rights revocation was shortened from five years to two years and six months.
According to regulations, a prisoner is entitled to apply for conditional release after serving two-thirds of their sentence. Based on this provision, Setya had served eight years as of November 2025.
With this ruling, the former Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives was deemed to have fulfilled both administrative and substantive requirements for conditional release. Agus also confirmed that Setya Novanto is not subject to any reporting obligations.
“No, because the subsidiary fine has already been paid,” he said.
Before his conditional release, Setya also participated in an assimilation program at Sukamiskin Prison, West Java. This program aims to prepare inmates for reintegration into society through social activities and supervised engagements.
Meanwhile, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stressed that the e-KTP corruption case serves as a crucial lesson for Indonesia.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo reminded that this crime caused a state loss of up to IDR 2.3 trillion and had a significant impact on public services.
“However, corruption remains a constant reminder and lesson for future generations, to ensure such a dark history never repeats,” Budi said in a written statement.
He added that the KPK will continue to strengthen anti-corruption strategies through education, prevention, and enforcement.
Budi emphasized the importance of collaboration among all societal elements to maintain a consistent fight against corruption.
“Unity and sovereignty among all elements of society are needed to combat corruption, for the realization of the nation’s ideals and goals,” he concluded.
