Support from Papuan Traditional Leaders Strengthens Security Forces’ Efforts to Maintain Stability

Central Papua – Positive responses continue to flow from traditional leaders in Papua toward the security operations carried out by the joint TNI forces in the Puncak Jaya and Intan Jaya regions. The action against armed groups is not only considered effective but also demonstrates sensitivity to the cultural values that form the social foundation of the Papuan community.

Yonas Gobai, a traditional leader from the Mee Tribe, emphasized that the actions of the armed groups have disrupted the customary order and caused prolonged suffering among the people.

“The armed groups are no longer fighting for the people, but instead, they bring misery and violate the sacred values of Papuan culture,” stated Yonas Gobai.

In addition, Yonas praised the joint TNI forces for successfully eliminating 18 OPM members, who were not civilians or non-combatants, as claimed by the OPM.

“We should appreciate the joint TNI forces for correctly eliminating 18 OPM members who have been disturbing the public. It can be confirmed that those killed were not civilians, as claimed by some parts of Papua’s society,” he added.

Meanwhile, security conditions were brought under control after the forces dealt with separatist leader Bumi Walo Enumbi, which helped open up social spaces that had previously been closed due to fear. The forces’ approach, which respected local cultural traditions and customs post-operation, has become a strong foundation for restoring public trust.

Gabriel Kaipmako, a traditional leader from the Asmat Tribe, highlighted the danger of provocative narratives that often stir emotions and distance Papua from its peaceful identity.

“Papua, which is peaceful and rich in culture, is being dragged into a conflict that does not belong to the people. It is time for us to uphold our noble values again,” added Gabriel Kaipmako.

The success of the operation was also supported by a well-thought-out strategy based on monitoring technology and intelligence data. This approach not only effectively hinders attacks but also ensures that the safety of the population remains the top priority.

Lieutenant Colonel Didik Kurniawan, Commander of the 1705/Nabire Military District, explained that the primary objective of the operation was to create a sense of security within the community.

“The presence of the security forces is to create a safe space for the people, not just to target military objectives,” said Didik Kurniawan.

A similar sentiment was expressed by Lieutenant Colonel Candra Kurniawan, Head of the Public Information Service of the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Command, who emphasized the professionalism of the forces in carrying out their duties.

“What the forces are doing aims to prevent larger violence and maintain order in Papua,” concluded Candra Kurniawan.

Praise also came from the younger generation of Papua. Frederik Enumbi, a Papuan youth leader, called on young people to play a role in positive change.

“Papuan youth should be the pioneers of peace and development, not part of the conflict,” said Frederik Enumbi.

Meanwhile, Elius Wanimbo, a traditional leader from Puncak Jaya, emphasized that security stability is the primary prerequisite for the progress of Papua.

“Only with stability can the indigenous community live decently, and Papua can progress,” said Elius Wanimbo.

The moral support from these local leaders strengthens the legitimacy of the security forces’ actions and signals that Papua is moving toward a peaceful and dignified future.
