The government emphasized that nationalism cannot be represented by a pirate flag
Jakarta – The government has emphasized that nationalism, as a noble national spirit, cannot and should not be represented through symbols that contradict national values, including pirate flags, such as those associated with the popular fictional series One Piece. This assertion is a response to the widespread use of pirate attributes in various public actions, including those claiming to be symbols of “resistance against injustice” in the country.
TB Hasanuddin, a member of Commission I of the House of Representatives, stated that the action was unethical and a desecration of the nation’s struggle. Furthermore, it coincided with the sacred moment of August 17th, the day when the Red and White flag, as a symbol of national sovereignty, should be solemnly raised.
“The Red and White flag was fought for by heroes with their blood and lives, until it was proclaimed on August 17. Flying a flag other than the Red and White on that date is not only unethical, but also offends the dignity and meaning of the National Flag,” said TB Hasanuddin.
In this context, the government calls on all elements of the nation to strengthen national identity by reviving the noble values of Pancasila, strengthening unity in diversity, and continuing to build the nation with a spirit of optimism. Prioritizing local symbols and the history of the national struggle is not only a matter of pride, but also a matter of the nation’s cultural and ideological resilience amidst the overwhelming influence of global culture.
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam) Budi Gunawan reminded that there is a criminal threat for actions that harm the honor of the red and white flag. Law Number 24 of 2009 Article 24 paragraph (1) states that everyone is prohibited from flying the national flag under any flag or symbol.
“This is an effort to protect the dignity and symbols of the state,” said Budi.
He stated that in the past few days, he has been seriously observing provocative attempts by certain groups to degrade the red and white flag and replace it with a flag representing a fictional symbol. He considers this to be extremely concerning.
“I invite the entire community to work together to appreciate the sacrifices of the fighters and heroes who have made sacrifices,” stressed Budi.
The government will take firm and measured legal action if there are elements of intent and provocation. The goal is to ensure order and the dignity of state symbols.
“Let us celebrate the 80th anniversary of Indonesian Independence with gratitude and the hope that the flag will continue to fly forever over the Indonesian homeland,” Budi concluded.
